Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

Found an interesting shot at Toronto Traction. Queen and Don River, with a mysterious, hitherto unknown streetcar route next to the river. I have to assume it was a precursor to the Broadview route, as it not only seems to link up with Queen, but then swerves east to destinations unknown. Also, note the train tracks on the east side of the Don. I wonder when they were shifted over.
Perhaps when the DVP was being constructed? Just a guess, but it seems somewhat likely.

My God College/Spadina was gorgeous. Big trees, even in the middle of Spadina... so nice. Some great old buildings too!

Here's another one

Toronto Star Building....wish we didn't lose this

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

Wow, the old financial district looked so cool... I wish the new one was built beside it instead of on top of it (ie. Montreal). Look how proud CCN looks... it's so dwarfed and insignificant now. What's that building just west of the Scotia building? (between Scotia and the Toronto Star building)

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

I know the picture above shows a radio mast on top of CCN but some older pics show that the building once had a large flagpole on its roof and in my opinion that completed the look of the building. I wonder if we could talk CIBC into coughing up some money to bring the flagpole back.

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

The building btw/Star & Scotia: Bank of Montreal. Like Scotia, planned pre-war, built post-war. I believe some of its sculptures were salvaged for Guild Inn purposes...

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

Again, what great pictures.

Does anyone recognize the location of the pictures showing the Queen? It is apparently on Hwy. 5 (Bloor and Danforth) with lots of greenery in the background. It doesn't really look like High Park to me, but I can't place where else it might be.

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

you can navigate around the archives yourself here

gencat.eloquent-systems.c.../resource/

just go into the various folders ie fo1137, ser228, etc

are there more pictures in the actual Toronto Archives building than there are available here online?

I spent a full day at the archives a few years back. There are hundreds of binders full of pictures.

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

I looked at this one and thought it idealized what many here consider urban heaven: transit, cycling, retail at grade, vibrant street activity, etc. Perhaps there is a little too many ads overhead a la D/Y square and would they just bury those utility wires already!

I want to visit Madame Kennedy and see what exactly a Completion Specialist is.

But look at all those people carrying Union Jacks in the photo. It probably wasn't taken on a regular weekday. Maybe it's a big WASP march or something.
