Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

The Bloor Bay/Yonge is mindblowing.

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

Though that does look a bit like a juvenile-delinquent ruffian leaning on the right side of the Bloor streetcar platform shot...

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

Yonge/Eg reminds us of how once upon a time, long long before Dundas Square, urban nodes and pivot points were great gathering spots for rooftop neon spectaculars--unfortunately, what was left of them tended to be deemed power-costly, inflexible and irredemably vulgar and were swept away for billboards and redevelopment by the 70s (the Gardinerscape being a partial exception).

The present-day sentimentality t/w Citgo in Boston proves the "you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" credo re rooftop neon, certainly. (And interestingly, I recall the tradition still being healthy in perfectly Euro-places like Barcelona in the 80s--whether Olympic-mania swept it away or not, I do not know.)

Maybe there's a point--it isn't that all this junk should be confined to Dundas Square, it's that it ought to be spread all around the city, recreate a c1960 major-intersection roofscape via LED technology, etc. Resurrect the Bloor/Jane Goodyear sign, that sort of thing...

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

Sigh... so neat to see, yet so sad.

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

More comments:

(1) Philip Johnson's Torno Penthouse under construction!
(2) Re Bloor-Bay, could some vestiges of the old still exist in the alley behind Holt Renfrew (i.e. how much of that was a refacing, rather than something altogether new, possibly?
(3) That Queen/Roncy shot captures one of those old "diving helmet" traffic-island reflectors; I think the last of those (well into the 80s, maybe even the 90s) was at the entrance to the Chrysler plant on Brown's Line...
(4) What you identify as "Yonge, near Lawrence" is Eglinton looking E from Oriole Parkway...
(5) That "Location?" thing, it's (pre-1-way) Adelaide looking E from Bay (I thought it might have been further W than Bay; but I think that curtain-walled thing at the far right was one of those things demolished for Scotia Plaza...)

wow. more please more. interesting idea about make a part of the city 60's authentic.

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

I would love to get all of these framed. Are these pictures available at high rez?

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

Are these photos all just sitting in the City of Toronto archives right now? If so, then they shouldn't be. Hopefully there'll be a City of Toronto Museum (aka Humanitas) soon where we'll be able to find photos like these.

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

Great thread! Keep the pictures coming.

It's actually the oppossing corner. The Bank of Nova Scotia is still there.

This one is freaky for me as my dad's sister owned Kendale Cleaners for much of the 1990s. She never bothered changing the name for business reasons.

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

One of the best threads in a long time. Every picture just blows me away. I totally love the one of the Miller Tavern (now known just as The Miller - fantastic fried oysters, I recommend them). Yonge Street - just one lane. Wow.

I can see somebody trying to resurrect Jerry Purcell's as the template for a hip eatery on King West or something...
