2022/24 Russian-Ukrainian War

The biggest attack of the winter over the past day. I don't have a breakdown, but 158 missiles and attack UAVs reported by Reuters. The news headlines are reporting high rise buildings, hospitals and a shopping mall targeted. I am unsure what of the electrical network was targeted.

Poland claims Russian missile entered its airspace (then presumably returned to Ukraine). (Link)

Any guesses on what Ukraine‘s 2024 spring/summer offensive will look like? It going to go one of two ways; more of the same, with incremental gains on both sides, or a breakthrough to Melitipol.

My hope is that the US, NATO and West have their domestic issues sorted and that aid over the winter/spring arrives aplenty. This should include hundreds of mine clearing and breaching systems.

There is much speculation that Ukraine will be on operational-level defence next year. Ride out the series of Western elections (i.e. US) and rebuild capacity in the form of trained manpower, equipment and ordnance. As per 1914-17, it certainly looks like the technological balance currently favours the defender. However, I cannot see necessarily see much better prospects in 2025. As Niall Ferguson wrote yesterday, the West and the US are noted for lack of strategic attention span. Let's hope not.
 
No idea if true. But if this is, it would be absolutely stunning. Reporting that Ukrainians shot down an Airborne Early Warning platform and an Airborne Command Post. There's no way this should happen. This would be the equivalent of the US losing an AWACS and a JSTARS in one day.

As a Hungarian Citizen myself, I am actually glad this is happening.

When I was there in June, you could tell how much of a hold Orban has on the country. In Budapest, he has a legacy project ongoing in the castle area using EU funds to restore the area to its pre WW2 state. This project is called the National Hauszman project and can be found here: https://nemzetihauszmannprogram.hu/

When it came to the media, it was almost like being in Russia. Nothing bad was said about Orban and there was only praise for his achievements.

If the EU puts the screws to him, it may help provoke change although if it does not it could also push them closer to Russia and China.

Hungary was better in the 90s when the Socialists were in power. Even in the early 2000s, they were progressive and advancing the country. The irony in all this is that in 1989, Orban was very much against authoritarianism and pushed back against soviet interference in Hungary!
 
It's too bad the EU and NATO don't have mechanisms to boot members. The threat of expulsion is the only way voters would take the these institutions seriously. This goes for Canada too. I bet if our views on defence spending would change is there was the threat of NATO expulsion.
