2014 Municipal Election: Toronto Mayoral Race

Her actual words and rhetoric have been largely the politicking of a seasoned politician rather than that of a genuine character...For instance when she brought up the stroller-mom waiting for the bus.

We were rolling our eyes by that point. Maybe that folksy crap works on a certain demographic, but I'd like to think most engaged Torontonians see right through that vacuous pandering. She needs to quit the political theatrics and work on being genuine. I'm still not sure why she has such a passionate base pushing her towards this; she has completely unimpressed us thus far. Maybe we just expected too much, but I don't get the impression she really cares at all. Seems like a bunch of "handlers" have taken control and are just pushing her towards this. Much like a bunch of guys in dark suits went to see Michael Ignatieff before he ran for the Liberal leadership.

Seeing Olivia Chow from this angle in the debate today, I wouldn't be surprised if many Torontonians are buying into Tory, Stintz and Ford's rhetoric of Chow being the 'NDP' candidate and the general fear-mongering that it implies.

At least Tory convinced us he was being genuine and sincere in his approach, even if it is all an act. I feel like out of all the candidates, he and (ugh) Ford were the only ones who actually showed up as themselves.

The media surrounds the Fords. Chow, Tory, Soknacki, Stintz ignored. This is the first time I could envision him winning again.
Yup, his road map to victory was quite apparent last night. Put it this way, if you don't know/don't care that Ford was lying, he was clearly the winner last night. Many more debates to come and much time for things to change of course, but Ford placed himself as "the man to beat" last night instead of the also-ran.

Why is the left pushing so hard for Olivia Chow to be mayor? She doesn't have an original thought in her mind. If it weren't for her marriage to Jack Layton, nobody would take her seriously. She's probably even more useless than Ford.

Typical criticism of Chow that we've seen on this board and in the press in general: vague, blanket dismissals about how she's not "serious" or she's a "socialist" or a "tax and spender". Either that, of some lie brought back from the 1980s.

It speaks volumes that the criticisms of the other candidates are very specific: Tory for his career of political failures and his unfunded transit promises, Stintz for her flip-flopping on the transit file and her bizarre campaign messaging strategy, and Soknacki for his inability to build broad-based support. (I assume Ford needs no mention here).

moved from Rob Ford thread...

Karen Stintz is trying to make "kitchen table common sense" happen. Sorry Karen, it's not going to catch on.

What's especially cute about that is that the majority of Torontonians probably don't have a kitchen that's big enough to contain a table & chairs.

I am like you!

So Ford, according to media has won the first debate (or at least came out on top).

This is a reminder that taking down Ford isn't going to be a cakewalk, despite what people say. Just because he's damaged goods doesn't mean he can't pack a good punch.

Funny how Stintz is getting called out on this sort of soundbite being nonsense, when she stole it from Jack Layton.

Just an FYI that I've merged the "debates" thread with this thread. It was felt among the mods that there was no point having these issues discussed in two separate threads, especially since there are ~100 debates coming up.
