Woodbine Centre

I went to the mall recently and wow is the mall in a bad state. So many storefronts are empty. the food court was not busy, and the mall smelled. the stores that were open looked so run down. I hope the mall gets a new owner that could actually take care of the property.

I'm hoping for a Blues Brothers sort of scenario.

Yeah it looks worse than it did 20 years ago. I don't know who they hired to do the tile but it's gnarly. The weird 3d vinyl wrapped along all the open skylights gives it a creepy 90's arcade vibe.

Across the street, renovations continue at the Woodbine Racetrack.

From the comments at Vintage Rexdale, I'm hearing this addition will be a hotel/entertainment centre. Some are also saying the Woodbine
Centre will be included in the racetrack renovations as well.

Though, with both the racetrack and the mall belonging to different owners, I find that prediction somewhat unlikely.

For further reading, I've also attached an article going over the plans for Woodbine Live from April of this year:

Yes, there is another thread about that.

If they hurry up and finish the 4200-seat theatre, they might be able to start having events before the new and strangely unused 5000-seat Fallsview theatre.
As mentioned in another thread, Pickering ("D-Live") seems to have at least temporarily dropped the notion of building an entertainment venue, and Rama's thin schedule looks more like the ones for the much smaller non-casino GTA venues like Rose Theatre Brampton and Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts.

And yes, as far as I know, the race track property has nothing to do with the mall across the road. For some time a few years ago there was a display inside the main entrance of the mall for alleged plans for additions that included condo buildings, a hotel, and an entertainment complex, so maybe that confused some people. There's photos of it back on page 4 and 5 of this thread.

The urbanist in me hates all these casino performance venues anyway. It really sucks revenue away from the central city and I doubt it is where the artists (and in some cases their fans) actually want to see them perform. I saw the Pet Shop Boys at Casino Windsor in 2014 with a bunch of blue-haired women. Strange evening.

Yup, the casino crowd often show up in the venues with a comped ticket, not necessarily knowing a band's music, and they are THE WORST audiences, even worse than the people who show up with corporate tickets at TIFF Galas and who have a deathly fear of emoting in public. Oof.

I'm laughing and in a way quite sympathetic...........but.....(don't I always do that)...............

You know the PSB formed in 1981; a woman (or man) who took an interest in them at the age of 22 (in '81)....would have been 55 in 2014 and 63 today.

Looks like the circus is back in town at the Woodbine Centre parking lot!
