The City of Toronto is accelerating some work to install streetcar tracks on Adelaide Street, which will require a full intersection closure of Adelaide and Yonge Streets followed by a full intersection closure of Adelaide and York Streets.

Adelaide Street West and Yonge Street intersection closure Beginning 6 a.m., Tuesday, October 10 until 11 p.m., Friday, October 13, the intersection of Adelaide Street West and Yonge Street will be fully closed to motorists and cyclists to allow construction crews to accelerate track installation.

This four-day full closure will allow the TTC streetcar track installation on Adelaide Street West between Yonge and Victoria Streets to be completed by the end of December instead of carrying over additional work, such as paving, into spring 2024. Once the full closure is completed on October 13, the intersection will re-open and Adelaide Street will remain reduced to one shared travel lane. It is anticipated that this acceleration of work will allow additional travel lanes on Adelaide Street in this stretch to re-open by mid-November, which otherwise would have remained closed until spring 2024.

Adelaide Street West and York Street intersection closure Beginning Monday, October 16 until mid-December, the intersection of Adelaide and York Streets will be fully closed to traffic so that crews can safely install TTC tracks in the intersection.

This intersection was to be fully closed for six weeks starting Wednesday, November 1, however the closure date has been advanced to provide crews with more space in the work zone to help manage complexities related to relocating underground utilities. Once the full closure is completed, the intersection will re-open and Adelaide Street West will remain reduced to one shared lane.

During both full intersection closures, the streets around the intersection will be open to local traffic only. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times throughout construction. The City will deploy Traffic Agents and Paid Duty Officers to help manage traffic in the area. Signage will be placed in advance to advise people driving and cycling of traffic changes during the intersection closures.

The City anticipates that construction to install TTC tracks between York and Victoria Streets will be completed by spring 2024. Lanes will re-open on Adelaide Street, between York and Victoria Streets as crews complete sections of track.

There's huge issues with the amount of streetcars out there, but is early Sunday morning really an issue?

Keep in mind that full service doesn't begin until after 9 AM on a Sunday. There were 89 streetcars scheduled early Sundays last board - surely this is up now with 501D and 503 being streetcars this morning. If you go back to just before Covid when there were streetcar shortages, there were only 82 streetcars scheduled.

A bigger issue is that later Sunday morning there was only 101 cars scheduled, compared to 130 pre-covid. Though Sunday afternoons there were 121 scheduled last month, compared to 130 pre-Covid. (that seems pretty impressive for last month, given 503, 512, and most of 501 were buses - but TTC summary tables are notorious for being out-of-date.).

I'm counting 119 right now using TTC umioq.com (aka NextBus) - including 12 on 503.

With Transee it's a bit harder to count - but I'm seeing 115, but that misses some of them sitting somewhere. Perhaps count the dots?

BTW, #72 is 4471 - which is shown last being at Nairn and Rogers ... in March. In reality it was last seen longer ago than that - much further north. :)

That's a 50% utilisation ratio.

Many factors at play, but a very big concern imho.

easy to not use any streetcars when half your routes are buses. Between the long forgotten Lakeshore, St. Clair, Broadview and downtown Queen closures the TTC is running buses on about 20km of active streetcar track
 
Now Metrolinx are starting THEIR streetcar track work on York Street.

Please see attached a notice for upcoming construction of streetcar infrastructure on York Street, starting as early as October 16, 2023.

This work will be conducted during weekdays from 7 a.m. – 12 p.m. with some overnight and weekend work required. This is expected to complete in fall 2024.

This notice is being shared with community groups and businesses, 311, and elected officials. Hard copies will also be carried by the field crew.

It makes ZERO sense to have BOTH TTC and MLX laying streetcar track and one must wonder why it could possibly take MLX a year to lay track on about 200 metres of York St.

It will take Metrolinx more than a year.

I expect it to be in by 2026 owing to unforeseen site conditions.
 
We have to take into account the time it will take Metrolinx to get into a lawsuit with the contractor, and also to address the hundreds of defects that will be found shortly after the new streetcar tracks are due to be open.

After we take all that into account, fall 2024 seems like it may be a little optimistic timeline on their end and we may actually see this open by 2025.

I wonder if Metrolinx is simply being anal over the defects. It seems like they are intentionally delaying things.
 
The 501 & 507 streetcars are supposed resume service to Humber Loop with the Nov board change.

Transit property is supposed to be installed or is being install along the whole Queensway ROW starting at KQQR intersection.
