TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

The New Streetcar Implementation Plan is now available for downloading in PDF form (all 35 pages), from this link.

There are many points of interest presented. For example, during the off-peak, the new LFLRV will generally replace one for one current streetcars, except for the 510 Spadina. On the 510 Spadina, instead of a streetcar every 1 m 53s during the mid-day, there will be a LFLRV every 3m 15s. Generally, the headway on the 510 Spadina will be every 3m 15s to 3m 30s, even during rush hour. The other streetcar routes could have wider headways during the rush hours. There are a few headway widening on some routes, but thankfully sparingly.

Delivery of production cars to start later in 2013, lasting until 2019. Proof Of Payment will be implemented by route as new LFLRVs are deployed. Apparently, the platforms on 512 St. Clair will have to upgraded by 2016 for use by the LFLRV by 2017/2018. 510 Spadina and 511 Bathurst will be the first to get the LFLRV by 2014. 506 Carlton will be the last to get LFLRV by 2018/2019.

By end of 2013, we should have 9 LFLRV available. 34 more in 2014, 36 more in 2015, another 36 more in 2016, 39 more in 2017, 36 more in 2018, and 14 more in 2019. Subject to change.

The abbreviation TVM in the PDF stands for Ticket Vending Machine. Other abbreviations you might come across could be PVM (Presto Vending Machine) or SRVM (Single-Ride Vending Machine). There will be two SVRM's per car, which will issue a POP receipt (accepting coins, credit/debit, tokens during transition, PRESTO), no tickets. Tickets will need a ticket validator (2 per car), during transition.

The ALRV's will be the first to be retired starting in 2014-2015. The CLRV's will be retired 2015-2018.

I note with some interest that they are going to install new overhead on Adelaide Street from Church to Spadina in 2015 even though they are not going to connect the Adelaide/York tracks when they replace the York tracks this summer and Adelaide is currently impassable.

The CNE sidings will be used as for temporary/contingency storage until the Leslie barn connection and facility are complete. 22 CLRV's could be stored there during 2014.

Hillcrest has space for 10 CLRV's during overhauls, body repairs, and storage.

That is indeed of "some interest". Any idea what they're thinking?

Carlton is last? Damn it! That's my line!

Clearly moving from Spadina and Richmond was a bad idea.

Doesn't make much sense in my opinion. That would be a very awkward route layout. It's really weird that we haven't heard anything fromt the TTC about this. I can't imagine what they're planning, beyond introducing streetcar service on Adelaide.

Nah, the remaining track is slated for complete removal (in 2019)

TTC doesn't known what the out come of the City study for the downtown traffic plan is at this time.

Having streetcars on Adelaide should happen, but you got 2 tower being built within 2 blocks of each other now at Bay. Then there are 3 for John St area, 1 at Peter St with lanes close off to traffic. On top of that, there are 2 more plan for John St. Getting eastbound cars to the core is easy, but getting them westbound is the hard thing.

Any new double tracks added to the system will have a wider space between the tracks than today. Queens Quay and Cherry St will be the first to see the wider gap.

Retirement of cars may happen as schedule or be delay as well.

Cannot see Russel be close and sold off as TTC is going to need more than the current 204 as ridership increase as well the system is expanded outside the Transit City Plan. Need 7 more cars for the QQ E line, 25 for the first phase of Portland and over 50 for the full plan. Cherry St will use current 504 cars.

Given the fact that the prototype cars are nine months late and cars not approved for full production yet, delivery of the new cars are going to slip unless more cars are built per year than schedule to keep the current schedule on track.

As for trollybuses, Seattle and SF just order 146 of them from NFI.

Service levels are way better than originally plan going back 1 year or 2005. I still see 2/3 routes headway's deceasing over time once the new cars go into service.

Saw cutting of sidewalk for access to the new cars for accessibility will tell us where stops are being remove and relocated too over the next few years.

The TTC is about to make curb cuts at the streetcar stops on Dundas and Queen so they are either planning on keeping all the stops or it's another case of right-hand vs left-hand. Locations are all marked on TO-InView (See http://map.toronto.ca/maps/map.jsp?app=TO_INview2013 and then tick-off TTC)
Project Description: Installation of new curb cuts including sidewalk and curb modifications to facilitate new accessible LRT vehicles. In addition, installation of ticket vending machines on streetcar routes.

Machines are going to be outside at every stop?

The report released yesterday says "up to 75 (machines) at busiest stops", so not at every stop.

The deployment order is as follows:

  1. Spadina and Bathurst (2014)
  2. Harbourfront (2014)
  3. Dundas (2014/2015)
  4. Queen/Lakeshore (2015/2016)
  5. King (2016/2017)
  6. St. Clair (2017/2018)
  7. Downtowner (2018)
  8. Kingston Road Tripper (2018)
  9. Carlton (2018/2019)

The scheduled overhead work is as follows:

I had thought the Queensway right-of-way overhead was done, but maybe it has to be just adjusted not replaced. Most likely the tracks east of Parkside and west of Roncesvalles would be reconfigured, which is why it will be done in 2014.

Would have been nice to see Cherry there, just so we all remember - even Doug and Rob - that that's happening...
