I think Arc en Ciel - success notwithstanding - offered a case study of why we need to be very careful with public art, given how neglected it was for decades (and still hasn't been restored, despite of multiple promises).

In this case, I'm not suggesting anything with moving parts or electricity, just better, more interesting/colourful finishes. That should, in theory, be maintainable.

I thought the piece at Downsview (now Sheppard West) was good (and course the mosaic at Dupont is delightful). Not so impressed by many of the other attempts (including the Dufferin reno) at using tiling as art. So much of the other stuff we got was banal/trite/poorly thought-out.

Sheppard West's free-standing art on the exterior I could take/leave.........

But the move to bring natural light to the platform level and to include high quality, colourful wall finishes I quite like:

Dufferin was just shoddy/cheap work. Very poorly thought out and done.

Museum suffers the same problem, DS did a better design plan on a tight budget but it still got VE'd. Museum was actually a reasonably well thought out idea. But cheapen the lighting, nix some of the more elaborate columns, cut back on the wall finishes and omit the mezzanine...........sigh.

I’m excited about the open expanses of the vertical circulation areas in these stations, less feeling of claustrophobia in heavily trafficked areas.

I rarely travel to TYSSE stations but it’s always a pleasant atmosphere in my opinion. I’m hoping for that same sense of grandeur at the more open underground sites of OL, namely Moss Park and Corktown.

Do these open vertical spaces raise an issue with smoke/fire containment? Would that open-ish shaft act like a chimney and draw fire up through the levels rapidly?

It’s slightly ironic but the large blank wall backs on to graffiti alley. Shame some of the colour and vibrancy couldn’t percolate through the wall to brighten up the station.
 
The renders have many people on cell phones. What they aren't accounting for is what the actual technology of the day will be when this opens in 50 years. :/

The large open vertical spaces are one of the measures used to compile with modern fire code, so it will likely improve the fire and smoke situation.
 
One minor quibble is the mix of rectangular and rounded columns - it is a little visually inconsistent, slightly messy. The reuse of the historical facades for purely transit purposes (instead of at least some attempt to incorporate retail) is also a little disappointing.

Though I am pretty happy with what we are getting overall (presented as is).

Agreed, good catch.

There’s little opportunity to squeeze retail in when there will also be a lobby for the TOC.

This looks like an old layout. The design has evolved a lot to accommodate the elevators only option and now there is hardly any space left.

Oh ya I just pulled that out of SvN’s TOC drafts, only meaning to highlight the whole ground floor inside the heritage facade isn’t just transit.
