Toronto Ontario Line 3 | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx

This site has been underused all these years, used as industrial lands before that... but if we want to build something real and permanent on the site people complain? Where is the community / city planned proposal that we are comparing Metrolinx's proposal to? Where is the outcome of the city Master Plan process that was supposed to be done last year? Why aren't we complaining that the community and city doesn't already have something better than car washes and car dealers planned? The building burned down in 1812... is 209 years not long enough for the city and community to put a plan together so that when the province comes to build a major transit facility it can be incorporated into that Master Plan? What would be the right way to use the site... recreate the grandeur of the First and Second Parliament from these detailed architectural drawings??

There was a decently long discussion here. started as a discussion around the ontario line ended as a discussion of Del Duca's proposal for steep off-peak fare discounts

Some candidates said outright they arent touching the ontario line but nothing specific from del duca about the ontario line

o/t rant. I think this thing would look much sleeker without catenary/pantos. And literally be sleeker by definition. Smaller profile, less obtrusive, also seemingly less costly. If we want this to win people over on the merits of elevated transit, third rail is the better choice.

Also say if the future desire was to convert Sheppard to the same trains for possible extensions or expansions of the new system, third rail allows that too.

3rd rail has reliability issues in cold weather with stuff like icing. For an elevated rail line especially in a city like Toronto, catenary is kind of a necessity unless you want to deal with reliability issues in the winter like we see on many parts of Line 1 and 2.

You do realize that Scarb Jct has had grade separation plans for ages. Nothing to do with OL. https://www.metrolinxengage.com/en/engagement-initiatives/scarborough-junction-grade-separation-pic3

And I think a flyover/under or two is still cheaper than like 1.5-2km of tunnel...

Indeed, Scarborough Junction has had grade separation plans for ages. And then during the recent online open house, Metrolinx said that "the change in the OL East Harbour station design allows us to save money by not grade-separating the Scarborough Junction".

Don't know if that's off the table forever, but it is off the table for this round.
 
For those wondering about 2022 and the election.

Del Duca specifically stated tonight that "any project advanced far enough will not be cancelled"

This thing is going to happen, The only question remains is whether the Go train section will stay as it is, buried alongside pape to eastern, or just straight tunneled underneath the tracks.

Neither of theese will cause the relief line version of stopping at pape or osgoode to come back into view.

Oh yeah a dinky trolley pole was no match for that weather. Still it's a vulnerability with aerial power. And there are advancements in third rail design and de-icing measures.

I'm still in third rail camp.

Wouldn't be surprised if they "cancel" the Eglinton tunnel by Doug's house. I put cancel in quotes because the project would still continue. Just not deep underground.

And it's a long tradition. NDP fast-tracked a subway under their leader's Eg West riding, next gov't cancels it. Current gov't fast-tracks a subway under their leader's riding, next gov't cancels it. It's just the way it goes.
