Toronto MaRS Centre Phase 2 | 112.77m | 20s | Alexandria | B+H

Any word on this? Now that One Bloor is back on this project is the most notable casualty of the recession.

I was just discussing this with a customer of mine who happens to be a senior project manager with Aecon and he informed me that the project is scheduled to re start in October. I didn't want to press him too hard for further information but it sounds like something to look forward too.

I won't get my hopes up too much until we see action on the site but this is certainly a very positive piece of news!

He was there for the original demolition on the centre bloock and mentioned they were originally looking at encorporating a geared to income hotel as part of the project. I think his info is trust worthy because I am very much looking forward to seeing this project move forward.

What's a "geared to income hotel" ?

A geared to income hotel sounds like a great idea on papaer although how the hell do you implement it.

Geared to income - possibly an incentive to young researchers in the MaRS district? Perhaps many are single and too busy to look for or lock into rentals & furniture purchases etc.

Frankly, though I am sure it would suit some young researchers "too busy to look for or lock into rentals & furniture purchases etc" it sounds a pretty crazy idea to me to use prime space physically connected to a group of hospitals and beside a major University for residences. I also doubt it is true as the main developer is a company interested in scientific buildings. ( Described on the MaRS website as Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc. — North America’s largest life-science property specialist). If the former ideas for the building on this site are not going ahead then I think the most likely use is for additional hospital or U of T space. Alexandra's share price has just about doubled since the project was put on hold so I suspect they will be involved in its resurection, and they don't do rental apartments.

MaRS is a non-profit public/private partnership so I don't see anything being outside their realm of possibilities. Also, the hotel idea could be similar to a Ronald McDonald House for nearby patient families.

No offense but I would not be waiting to see any form of hotel as part of this project. We already hve several new hotels coming on line, and more importantly it's hard to visualize an activity which would be more unlike the Mars operation. I don't see similarities or synergies. I'll be extremely glad to see the project revived, however, so I'll hope for some truth to the rumour about some action in the fall.

Aecon was involved in demolition on the original central portion of MARS. It was at that point when a hotel component to the project was being considered for families of patients in near by hospitals. I guess that was not considered a viable option at that point and it is no longer being considered for the remainder of the project. We can however look forward to the restart of construction activity in October .
