Street photos 194o's to 1980's

The story was that Leonard Poole was walking dowtown and just wanted to use up a few rolls back in 1970ish. Most of his shots were Yonge/College and Yonge/Bloor

I remember hitching a ride up Yonge from the north-east corner of the intersection, with a high school friend, in the summer of '70 or '71. A big truck with an open back pulled up, we jumped in ... and off we went, along with several other young hippies already aboard, bumping up Yonge Street and hanging on so as not to fall out the back.

And somehow we made it to the year 2011 Urban Shocker.

The boys hanging out in front of 363 Yonge Street 1970.

What on earth *was* The Market? Talk about a retail something that made a visual splash, then disappeared into the ether...

Interesting shots of circa-1970 femininity--also worth noting: *two* Evangeline shops (around the 2 Carlton Laura Secord, and next door to Stollerys), and a reminder that when Starbucks took over the Yonge + College CIBC location, the "Gothic" sloped sills were lopped off.

And, yeah, again, the successive vertical "HYDRO" and "ODEON" lettering looking east on Carlton.

This is a random photo I think might be in East York. I have thousands of photos and I know every one except this one. Not that I am obsessive or anything but it keeps me awake at nights. Have fun google streetview addicts.

As far as I remember it was like a hippie flea market with stalls that sold belts , hash pipe , stoned again t-shirts , posters and everything else freaky.

Somehow, the 60's look holds up so much more:

Yorkville (from the Star Archives):

Caption for the second pic:

Caption: Joan and Frances went to visit the shops and cafes of Yorkville. Joan was not impressed by the habitues. "They are beatniks, not 'ippies," she said. But, like many others, she found the Village a pleasant place to stroll on a nice day and a good place to shop. The students managed to make themselves understood in each other's languages, but Frances admitted she found it tiring at first. Caption: Photo taken by Jeff Goode/Toronto Star May 26, 1968. Quebec City and Toronto exchange students visit Yorkville.

Caption for June's pic:

Caption: June Callwood, in private life Mrs. Trent Frayne, is a writer fighting for rights of the Yorkville hippies. She has four children from 23 to 7. Photo taken Aug. 22, 1968

Caption for Joni's pic:

Caption: Three years ago Joni Mitchell was offered a job as a dishwasher in a Yorkville coffee house. This week and next, at the same coffee house, she's the star entertainer. Three years from now she may be one of the biggest names in North American folk music. Photo taken by Doug Griffin/Toronto Star April 18, 1968.

Harry Joy at Bloor & Spadina (MNJCC)

I haven't been yet, but there's an exhibition of photographs by Harry Joy at the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre, at the corner of Spadina and Bloor, that looks interesting:

Yes indeed! Harry Joy's exhibit is a joy to behold. I visited last week.
There are many vintage images of the Kensington Market area - great "street photography."

The Hydro pole appears to be concrete and was that style of streetlight ever used in East York? The scene may be in the City instead of East York.

Wow, some of these should be available in print.
This one makes me wonder where those guys are now.

And this guy with the lambchops looks like my grade seven shop teacher.
