Thanks for the location, fiendishlibrarian.
Any idea of the dates?

Yes indeed! Harry Joy's exhibit is a joy to behold. I visited last week.
There are many vintage images of the Kensington Market area - great "street photography."

I went today - wish the exhibition was larger, and that the dates the photos were taken had been included in the label information. The online exhibit is more extensive, though.

As far as I remember it was like a hippie flea market with stalls that sold belts , hash pipe , stoned again t-shirts , posters and everything else freaky.

Yeah, I'm *really* intrigued by it, not least by the honking huge scale of the facade signage. And given how utterly memory and evidence of The Market disappeared (ah, hopefully Jamie Bradburn will do a Torontoist thing on it someday), I wouldn't be surprised if it were a catastrophically-managed, quickly-euthanized white elephant--like those who were responsible for putting it together were, uh, on drugs or something. (Rosedale trust-funders a la Thor Eaton, perhaps?)

Oh, and re this photo

Fallen as it is, it must be one of the first "modern" TTC bus stop signs.

The skyline shot seems 1976ish (Royal Bank Plaza already there, as was Sheraton Centre under that name; but there was yet only one Harbour Square condo tower)

The Yonge south of Eg shot would be maybe 1962ish? (if that's 2200 Yonge on the right under construction w/hoarding)

The Bank of Upper Canada, built 1827, showing the portico added in 1844 which was designed by John G. Howard of Colborne Lodge fame.

As admirable as the preservation of the Bank of Upper Canada and the First Post Office are, one wishes the clumsy Victorian third floor additions on both were removed to bring back the Georgian proportions. You with me on this, U. S.?

One thing that has always intrigued me regarding the Royal Bank tower. When it was new there were those small squares along the curtain wall that I think added nicely to the whole effect. Now they are gone. Does anyone know anything about this?

I miss Elsie The Cow on Lawrence.

Growing up in the States, popsicles and the like made by Borden came on Elsie Stix, which were coloured plastic sticks with holes you could build stuff from. Did they have them in Canada as well?
