OLG Toronto/GTA casino proposal (where to put it?)

^I think sixrings is referring to the already operating Fantasy Fair at Woodbine Mall, not Woodbine Live!, the proposed entertainment district at the Woodbine racetrack.

I couldn't agree with you more.....
That is what I have been saying, putting a casino somewhere that is already developed will be disasterous for the surrounding businesses. The monster resort and casino will srive to keep people within the walls of the resort and will encourage them to only spend their money there. There is only so much tourist dollar to go around, and dropping a mega resort casino into downtown toronto will suck all that tourist money away.

However, Markham is another story. The area in Downtown Markham is not yet developed. For the most part it's just a large piece of flat land (in the geographic heart of the GTA). So we can build all the structures and roads, but how do we get people and business there? How do we attract them to Markham and get them to stay? We don't want a monster casino resort....just a casino.

The casino would hurt business development in Toronto.....but it sure would help it in Markham.

Greektown casino is a good example of how a casino can actually help a neighbourhood. I stayed there at the Greektown hotel and I got voucher dollars to go out and eat in Greektown (outside the casino). That helps small local businesses and got me walking the streets. Also the casino has multiple street entrances.

Are you sure? I thought he was talking to my recent post about an entertainment district, and comparing it to woodbine live. I would love to see woodbine live, but will it ever happen? And what can go at OP?

You had me at "Planet Hollywood"....... :(

I'm just giving an example. Planet Hollywoods are usually in these kinds of places. However, I would like to see something different and new here. Maybe nicer restaurants. Im just saying that kind of thing.

A shopping/entertainment district. A place with rides, a permanent show (such as Cirque), traveling entertainers, an outdoor stage. Shops, hotels, museums. Arcades, fountains, fireworks. Do you get what I'm saying? I actually think Planet Hollywood is kind of tacky. I want this place to be nice and high end, but tourist friendly.

It could be a really cool place!

The Ex and OP. Whatever they call it. The CNE would still take place, but the place would be a 24/7 thing.

Do you get my point?

It could have an outdoor main plaza place

And it COULD be used year round! Maybe a retractable roof like this mall? (I'm not saying to build a mall like this at all, I'm just showing their roof concept)

I think the ultimate point might be that what if there's any excuse to kickstart Woodbine Live!, it's through the casino-and-more package schemes you're proposing--or for that matter, the inverse: that was the point of Woodbine Live! in the first place, and look at it now. Pie-in-the-sky, a Godot we're all waiting for, etc. A little boy's dreamworld colliding with reality.

And believe me, if all of this were actually to come to pass at Woodbine, it'd be ideal for the Fords because it's in their own constituency, and it'd be ideal for downtowners because it's the hell outa their hair. Look at it this way: downtown Torontonians don't feel jealous or resentful of Vaughan because it has Canada's Wonderland and Toronto doesn't.

(Speaking of said "dreamworlds", coolcanadian's posts read as if the only experience he's had of anything downtown-Toronto or just generally "urban" is through the intermediary of a parental-automobile back seat.)

People on this forum have an attitude. A casino resort would work at Woodbine Live, but it would also work downtown. I cannot imagine a roller coaster or ferris wheel at woodbine. It would be weird. I'm giving my ideas and opinions of what we could see at OP.

@adma - What would you like to see there? Seriously...

And people downtown Toronto would like another major tourist attraction. Look at OP is located!! And now its dead. It needs to be a new thing.

I was talking woodbine live.. The only thing I like about woodbine mall is the little amusement park. Relocate that one section of woodbine to overtop of Holtz when the food court moves at yorkdale mall and make me a happy camper. Woodbine live makes me happy because I won't need to drive to casino Rama to watch the temptations and the four tops.

Ontario Place was not dead. Yes, it's dead right now because it's CLOSED! I went there 3 times last summer and all the attractions were very busy. The park over-all is not crowded like it used to be but it wasn't empty either. A lot of families went for the water-park and the Amphitheatre gets big crowds, which is why they are keeping it open, so parts of Ontario Place are profitable. Echo Beach will also be kept open, so that must also be bringing in money. It's a nice little venue for shows.

I agree with you that OP needs a big, new attraction, I just don't agree with what that is.

Toronto has two full-sized waterparks - Wild Water Kingdom (the original) and Splashworks at Wonderland, both of which are about the same size. Indoor waterparks are by definition family destinations. Ontario Place had a rather good selection of family-oriented waterpark attractions, and look at it now.

If it was open all year round, it might generate more income I think? None of the water parks you listed open all year. They open in the summer only. They're also far away in the suburbs and cater to cars. Wonderland has buses that go there, but still pretty far away.

Ontario Place venues to be closed by province
Cinesphere, water park, amusement rides will be shuttered

I assume the whole OP will be closed down? It's suppose to be a family entertainment spot. They need a business model that will work or else it's going to sit empty indefinitely. The place will go to waste. It would be nice to have an attraction there that will attract people all year round rather than just the summer.

Back to the main topic, the CNE grounds might work well as for a casino if Toronto was indeed stuck with one. But it would really have to be one mere part of a new master plan for OP/Ex grounds (imagining hotel, family-oriented entertainment and restaurants, more trade space on the CNE grounds itself, perhaps a rebuilt Flyer, maybe even that danged Ferris wheel for the CNE side, melding with a mature nightlife district and waterfront park angle for OP). But I bet OLG will be looking for a quick build with lots of parking, not what I would like to see for the waterfront.

OLG wants to build in Markham. We don't want OLG here anyhow if they're just going to build a casino. MGM seems like the better offer with an entertainment facility with only 5-10% casino. Not crazy about the casino, but an entertainment complex would be good. Their investment quoted range seems wide though, 2-6 billion. It might end up be on the lower end of 2 billion. I don't know how much they can build with that amount.

When did olg say they ever wanted it in Markham? I thought Markham just came up as a option from forumers when realizing it would compliment the new Markham arena. Mgm simply said they wanted to be downtown and not at woodbine but I never heard them express other options outside the waterfront.

Honestly; you sound like a twelve-year-old boy from the 'burbs whose only downtown Toronto experience is along the lines of going with parents to see fireworks, Jays games, etc. You're an absolute urban naif.

And what's so fatally implausible about a coaster or ferris wheel at Woodbine? They have enough space to build amusement-park attractions out there; and there's already an indoor ferris wheel nearby--and the overall "urban" setting isn't so much different from Wonderland, really...

The watermark may have seemed busy when you went, but it was not profitable. Not at all. Attendance figures have drastically dropped, and this place needs to be completely re done. Plus, last year attendance was free.

Making it a huge entertainment complex, with amusement rides, resorts, shops, restaurants, shows, casino, etc sounds like a good idea to me.

If it had an indoor/outdoor ability, like the pictures I posted above, it would be great for summer and winter.
