Niagara Falls Hilton Phase II (53s, 172m, Stanford Downey Architects)

really? what floor are you on? one of the cool things about NF is you can see both Toronto and Buffalo from here. (though of course Buffalo aint all that impressive and is best appreciated from a distance) I cant quite see this new construction from my balcony as I am facing south and only catch the southmost hotels. I wont be able to see anything once the trees get leaves...

I doubt NF will ever touch Toronto's skyline. Building here on such a scale is speculative and promises lots of empty rooms during the winter months. I guess when hotels become of such a height they can be a draw in themselves... the competition for tourism dollars is all about marketing and it helps to say we have the biggest or flashiest whatever it may be. Perhaps this is indication of a renaissance for NF.

Was there last weekend and noticed this gigantic hole, too. The hotel lacks in almost every way but it will add height and an anchor to the fallsview strip. This part of Niagara is so funny considering how built-up it has become in the past 5 years with the new casino. But one street north or and one street east and you have the old rundown, dive motels.

wow... Is it just me or will that thing being absolutely hideous,

Are they trying to make it resemble the already built Hilton?

I take it the foundation was already in place as this project is really moving along quickly. Anyone know?

no, there was an excavation first before they started building - I think they only went down about 2 floors. they've been working on it for about a year now, so ya it is moving along rather quickly.

It ain't just you.

I believe that is the original design as it did change. Whether it is acceptable or not is another thing.

Anyone have access to the updated design renders then?

Let's hope so. That design in the OP is very unfortunate!

It's completely awful...

Too bad that the sides of those buildings that face away from the falls can't be treated the way that the blank walls on the Met were done. When this thing is finished it will be like looking at a 58 storey wall from the west. (Shudder.)

Anyone at Niagara Falls City Hall ever hear of "architecture"? Besides what they saw in Las Vegas?

The best thing about seeing the falls from the Canadian side is no longer the falls themselves - it's now the fact that you have your back to these hideous monsters.

As hideous as it is we probably should ask ourselves the question ... does it really matter?

Take Las Vegas for a second, has anyone seen day time pictures of the city ... they are rare but exist! ... I warn you though, have a bag beside you if you are tempted just in case :)

And the new buildings going up there?? at least two bags will be needed if you want to look at those.

But does it really matter?, does anyone case?, no not really, for what it is it likely doesn't matter what this ends up looking like.

The Embassay Suites Hotel is not half bad. So what Hilton is basically saying is: We don't have the same cash flow as Embassay Suites and will therefore construct this garbage because it's in Niagara Falls and no one will care.

Developers are building glass boxes in Toronto like they are going out of style, can't they do it in Niagara Falls too?

you'll be able to see this quite easily from Welland and probably Fort Erie too. It's insane to think that a city of 75,000 could have a skyline.
