Niagara Falls Hilton Phase II (53s, 172m, Stanford Downey Architects)

Will this be the tallest in Niagara Falls? I recall a proposal for a 700 footer beside the Brock Plaza near the original casino site.

While I'm not too happy about the design of the tower (looks like a typical suburban hotel on steroids), I'm very impressed with the height.

All the recent developments in Niagara Falls make me want to ask this question: Which is the better skyline in the "905"? Niagara Falls or Mississauga?

Niagara Falls is more impressive in terms of sheer height, design (certainly not to be confused with good design; it's inevitable that tourist-oriented hotels have more effort put into their design than condos), and the shock value of remembering what it was like just a few years ago.

Mississauga is more impressive as an urban skyline. I've seen it from the QEW, the 403, and the Milton GO hundreds of times but I'm still often surprised by how many towers there really are in Mississauga.

It reminds me of the Houston-style skyline versus Toronto-style skyline debate. Overall, I think I would have to go with Mississauga.

I spent the holidays in Niagara Falls with the family. The place is just booming and happening!

I was even surprised by the nightlife. The new Dragonfly nightclub inside the Fallsview Complex is by far the better than anything Toronto or the GTA offers. The decor, service, lighting, sound and crowd (20 somethings) was fantastic.

I was further impressed by the city's landscaping efforts and I noticed that cameras were installed at almost every single intersection.

The city however is in need of a rapid transit system to connect the various attractions. I know planning for a Monorail system had begun back in 2005, but I haven't heard anything since. If anything, the Niagara Parks system should run their people mover service year round and not just in the summer.

As for downtown. I finally took a walking tour it myself, and it is just down right depressing. It was empty, no cars, no people, nothing. I would abandon any hope of making it a shopping destination for tourist. I would focus revitalization by turning downtown into a destination for city and regional residents. Build a new central library, YMCA, a performing arts centre, a hockey arena for an OHL team and maybe even a new city hall.

Well, if the NFHilton is Rochestrian at all, one might say it belongs to the "Garbage Plate" school of architectural design...

Thanks to your Mississauga for providing the OHL team!

IceDogs might land in Niagara

Canadian Press

NIAGARA FALLS, ONT. -- The Mississauga IceDogs could call Niagara Falls their new home as early as this September, if the team's owners and city council can make a deal to build a 5,000-seat arena.

Capital Sports Management Inc. owns two Ontario Hockey League teams -- the IceDogs and the St. Michael Majors -- in Toronto and area. But the OHL won't allow them to own two teams, so the company is working with Toronto investor Tom Bitove and arena designers Stadium Consultants International to put the IceDogs in Niagara Falls, so the Majors can move to Mississauga.

"When you come with all those assets, we're pretty strong. We're bullish on Niagara Falls," Capital Sports president Roy Mlakar said after making a presentation to city council Monday night.

Council voted to create a committee to look into Capital Management's proposal. It will have to happen quickly -- the OHL has a governors meeting at the end of January, when they will want to know what Capital Management has done to sell its second team.

Capital Sports' plan would require a partnership with the city of Niagara Falls. The hockey company wants the city to build a $35-million sports and entertainment complex that would become the new home of the IceDogs. The hockey team would use the centre 40 or 50 nights a year, but it would be available for community events such as boat shows, concerts, wrestling or boxing.

Bitove said he would likely rename the team -- possibly as the Flyers, in tribute to the team that played here from 1960 to 1982.

It's probably a suitably designed tower for that part of the city. It would also do well in Orlando. I've read that increasing the density and height of hotels above the falls will also increase the 'rain' in the area, so take your brolly when visiting.

Niagara Falls should build a large convention centre. It seems like the kind of place that would be a very popular convention destination.

The only problem with a large convention centre is the issues of international access. The closest truly international airport is Pearson (Buffalo has few, if any scheduled flights outside the US). I could see it potentially attractive to North American scale conferences, but international, I don't know.
