John Street Roundhouse: Toronto Railway Heritage Centre, Steam Whistle, The Rec Room

I wonder if 100 years down the line people would be calling for the preservation of that nondescript grey shed, just like we have called for the preservation of the Roundhouse today, which was probably also considered a nondescript building when it was first built.

See our post in the Doors Open 2010 thread in the Out & About subforum about visiting this new Toronto attraction on opening weekend during Doors Open.

Toronto Mayor David Miller will officially open the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre and Roundhouse Park on this Friday, May 28 at 10 a.m.

Many of those who helped create the unique heritage attraction will also be present, including Glenn Garwood of the Toronto Public Service, Orin Krivel, president of the Toronto Railway Historical Association (TRHA), Derek Boles, the TRHA’s historian and Don Loucks, heritage architect for IBI Group. Many of THRA’s volunteers, including Transit Toronto contributor, Richard White will also attend.

The new heritage centre opens to the public free of charge from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. during Doors Open Toronto on Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30. The site includes a number of heritage locomotives beside a functioning interlocking tower, conductor simulators, the fully restored historic Don Station and a miniature railway traversing the park.

Toronto Mayor David Miller is officially opening the Toronto Railway Heritage Centre and Roundhouse Park today at 10 a.m. The new centre will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. during Doors Open Toronto on Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30. As you can see from the photos the centre includes a miniature railway for the kids. Within the Roundhouse Steam Whistle will be providing Doors Open access as well as guided tours of the brewery. So miniature trains for the kids and cold beer for the adults. Can't beat that.

A special notice to UrbanToronto fans and members. While Steam Whistle will be open both Satuday 10 AM until 6 PM and Sunday 10 AM until 5 PM, UrbanToronto suggests you plan to be there on Saturday at Noon or 1 PM when Steam Whistle's architect, Dave Taylor of Ware Malcolm, will be on hand to present the design process of creating a brewery in a historic industrial building. Come see the building, enjoy the beer, and come and meet us along with fellow UTers amongst the crowd.

Map of the area include route for the miniature railway. What was a desolate park a few years back is certainly coming to life.

is this park and museum fully open now? I wanted to take my 3 year old who loves trains but not if it was still only "half" open. Is the mini train open for the kids yet?

The mini trains run between noon and 3pm, at least on the weekends. There is a playground there as well which your 3 yr old will like.

On Sunday they had the cab of the big steam engine available for viewing, but it is a steep set of stairs to get up to it.

The roundhouse museum was not open on Sun, nor were they operating the turntable.

But take your 3 yr old on the little train and let him play at the park, he'll have a great time.
