GO Transit: Union Station Shed Replacement & Track Upgrades (Zeidler)

Still in the works - but unfunded. It would be a separate project, and is related to streetcar expansion on Queens Quay East and Bremner. The second platform for the subway station (also a separate project) is under construction though, and provides a direct connection from the new Yonge north platform to the streetcar loop.

Bremner is getting a streetcar? I had no idea of this proposal. I was under the assumption that it was only Queens Quay East that was getting new streetcar tracks.

TTC approved the concept at the June 18, 2008 meeting. Here is the report - http://www.ttc.ca/postings/gso-comr...-_FORT_YORK-BREMNER_BOULEVARD_-__11519_CR.pdf

They've already built the median streetcar-ready on Fort York from Spadina to Bathurst (Bremner turns into Fort York at Spadina). We had a thread on it - http://urbantoronto.ca/forum/showth...nion-to-Exhibition-via-Bremner-Blvd-Streetcar

And the last public presentation is http://www.toronto.ca/involved/proj...24_pic3_exhibition_place_and_union_stn_p5.pdf and http://www.toronto.ca/involved/proj...24_pic3_exhibition_place_and_union_stn_p6.pdf

Needless to say, it's going nowhere fast ...

I think we can safely say that the chance of Bremner getting a new streetcar line under the current mayor is essentially zero.

Yes, but what are the chances of getting the current mayor under a new streetcar? :)

Sorry ... couldn't resist ... I'll get my coat ...

I guess in 2008 I was so distracted with all of the stuff happening with Transit City and the East Bayfront that this project kind of fell through the cracks, haha. Is it awaiting funding, or has it been funded already?

I have to say I do like the idea of it though, certainly provides a good link to Union.

With the size of the SUVs he drives, I'd say pretty unlikely. He would actually need to walk places in order for that to happen.

Awaiting funding ... probably until either we have a new mayor, or there's some kind of revolt ... which seems to be getting closer given the number of those on Ford's Executive who have made it clear they don't support library cuts.

Cost that was listed was $180 million. I particularly like the "Under the Gardiner" alignment, much quicker than the convoluted route that was initially proposed. I wonder if the next mayor can get some of that federal funding for Sheppard to be put here.

I have to say, after reading through the summary report, I'm pretty impressed with it. I was always in favour of the idea of the Waterfront LRT, but I was under the assumption that it was just extending the existing ROW west from Exhibition. The Bremner-Fort York alignment makes me even more in favour of that project.

There won't be a streetcar on Bremner. It was to be part of the Waterfront West Transit City line, which is now canceled. Even the last council under Miller wasn't 100% for this line, and it wasn't brought to the Province for funding with the rest of the lines.

The Cityplace Residents Association is actually in talks with the TTC now to do something with the ROW that was built along Ft. York Blvd, as they have informed us that the chances of the line ever being built are slim to none.

That's unfortunate news, because I'm sure that it would be a pretty well used line, even if it was just a shuttle from CityPlace and the Ex to Union. Let the Bathurst and Spadina streetcars use the current Queens Quay ROW, and have the Exhibition streetcar use the Bremner-Fort York ROW.

For all those wondering about why the coach terminal wasn't placed at Union. Be expecting a new coach terminal to be announced and built at Union. I've seen some files go around, and it looks like this is one of the major projects that is being pushed forward by the province. I can't show you the reports, but the concepts show a building being built behind the existing postal office (current GO bus terminal) and there would be multiple floors/ levels of bus bays for both GO Transit and Coach Canada, Greyhouand, etc. This would effectively get rid of the Bay/Dundas terminal, and I guess some money can be recouped from selling-off the land. (although this last part is just my own assumption, I don't know who owns the land)

TTC owns the land. The current debt on the Bay/Dundas location is higher than the land and building value.

Remember this next time Greyhound says they're not subsidized on major routes; that and roadway maintenance.

Thanks BMO for the info. about the Coach Canada terminal possibly and smartly moving down to this improving transit hub. Union would be an even more dynamic and important Hub with these added and needed transit options situated down there (and closer to the on-ramps to the highways that commuter buses need!).

Whoever owns the land at Bay and Dundas would be in for a windfall if they sold it or leased it out if the Coach Canada terminal vacated the area.
