Church-Wellesley Village

For anyone familiar with Cawthra Park, all around the AIDS Memorial there were probably 100 beautiful, large rose bushes that were as much an attraction as the Memorial. My neighbour in the elevator told me today that it's all been chopped down, I was furious. I went and looked but couldn't really see past the back construction gates (at Cawthra St.) but I also noticed that the old black iron fences that sat within each former window of the curling rink wall (along Monteith St.) have also been removed and replaced with modern steel bars. I'm not pleased at all with what is happening here. I went to one meeting about a year ago now, and none of these details were mentioned.

That's a real shame about Java Jive. I wouldn't eat the food there but the coffee was fine and the patio was a friendly, relaxing and sunny place to meet up with friends in the afternoon. There was always plenty of eye candy walking by there too!

For me it's (so far) just another horrible revamp of Church St (the murals, the copper street signs, the 'gate poles'...) Will have to judge when it's completed but so far (for me) it isn't looking that great. The only things I've liked that has come out of that Church St revamp group (what are they called?) are the pumpkin lights for Hallowe'en and the snowflake lights for winter.
 
Church Mouse revamp.

What do we think? I like the elevated patio and the new floor. I'm not liking the fact that they took away the iron fence and replaced it with some Plexiglass (?) strips. Hopefully, they don't stray from being and feeling like a pub and more toward a bar.

In a never-ending quest to appease the gay sacred cow of diversity, perhaps the gay hegemony, feeling there is too much good taste in The Village already, wanted to balance the visual equation by hiring gays with bad taste to shape the public realm. Thus the Normcore murals, gates and now the park.

Or perhaps this is part of the on-going battle between the Gays and the Queers; the first preferring solid design and quiet good taste, the latter preferring Socialist Realism and vegan stews made in a slow cooker purchased at the weekly lawn sale in front of Carman's Dining Club on Alexander Street.

If the objective was to make The Village resemble the shabby Main Street of a small college town anywhere in rural Ontario, the hegemony - with the tireless efforts of Councillor KWT - have certainly succeeded.

I imagine the next stroke of brilliance will involve hanging those tired Pride flags everywhere, just to make sure the obvious is over-stated.

I have to agree that solid design and good tastes seem to have disappeared in the village.
instead of doing something classic which will endure over time, we have something that's fashionable and look dated by the time it's completed.

btw who is CTW you keep referring to ?

OK, so you hate the Gay Village, you hate Dundas Square, you hate Yonge Street, You hate the gay community, you hate Smitherman, you hate KWT and yet, you seem to like Rob Ford. Interesting! If the Gay Village and Toronto is such a terrible place, why even live here?

Looking back at your postings, it's almost impossible to find anything you actually like. I don't see you praising any buildings or anything about Toronto. The closest you get to praising anything is when you promote Rob Ford. Yep, not a single bit of criticism for the one thing almost everyone agrees, is a disaster for this city. That probably says more about where you're coming from, than anything else.

It's clear to me you have an agenda and seeing the gay community do well, is not part of it. You seem to look foreward to the day when the Gay Village vanishes. I'm just curious, are you gay? You seem relentlessly homophobic to me. Wouldn't your life be better if you found some nice, straight, conservative, prim and proper city or town, somewhere far, far away from the gays? (and Church Street)

Seriously, you seem to be filled with so much hate for just about everything but especially the Gay community. Go back and read your postings and see how much positivity you express about the city you choose to live in. Sure, we all like to complain about stupid stuff but you take hateful rants to a whole new level.
