General cycling issues (Is Toronto bike friendly?)

Yeah, it's a terrible set up for last mile type rides. It's useful as an alternative to the subway (can get almost anywhere downtown in the 30 mins allotted, depending where you start), the way it's set up, but it's not designed to be used as a compliment to it. Hopefully it gets there as the...

    Toronto Bike Share

Ward 30 Councillor Paula Fletcher replied to me on Twitter saying expansion in the east is planned for 2018. I tagged ward 32 councillor McMahon in the conversation, so hopefully she can advocate for the Beaches. I also tweeted to the relevant BIAs hoping they'll advocate as well (and emailed...

    GTHA Transit Fare Integration

I think fare zone are the way to go. Except, you're allowed to cross a boundary once for the base fare (equivalent of a TTC fare today). Very rough example: You'd be allowed to go from Mississauga to Brampton or Etobicoke for 1 fare. Or from North York to Vaughan. Or from Ajax to...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s

The goal is most certainly not to relieve traffic congestion. That's not the goal of any GTA transit project. If it is, it's rather ill-conceived.

    TTC: New Fare Gate Installation

Does anybody know the status of the full height fare gates at the east end of the concourse at Kennedy Station? There was a sign saying their removal and replacement was to begin on February 3rd. Can anyone confirm this?

    TTC: New Fare Gate Installation

I may have just missed it being posted here, but Pape's secondary exit has re-opened with the Presto gates. It is now a secondary entrance as well as an exit, which is quite useful.

    King Street (Streetcar Transit Priority)

You might be right about the first part. As for King vs Open Streets, well, we're talking about a most car-free zone... I don't think it will be as dissimilar as you make it sound. The only difference will be streetcars, which are not exactly unpredictable machines.

    King Street (Streetcar Transit Priority)

@steveintoronto Have you ever biked during Open Streets? Pedestrians and cyclists and a million other street uses can mix very well. You just can't bike like you're in the Tour de France. You bike deliberately and make eye contact with other people using the street. It's really not difficult...

    King Street (Streetcar Transit Priority)

They're perfectly compatible everywhere else in the world... we'll learn.

    King Street (Streetcar Transit Priority)

With respect to the centre running cycle lanes in the render above... I think we need to recognize that no matter the configuration, King Street will not be a superhighway for bicycles. We have that in the Richmond/Adelaide corridor just to the north for higher speed travel. King Street is a...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s

Well, for one, it's still being designed. Secondly, there's no point. It's not like the underground stations are going to be complete, sitting empty for months or years while they work on the at-grade segments. There's no point in starting the construction yet. It won't take all that long to...

    Metrolinx: Presto Fare Card

They don't *have* to enforce anything. Someone will have already paid a fare to be in the fare paid zone at a subway station. They aren't evading a fare by not tapping. But they may cost themselves an extra fare if they have a further transfer on the trip - the system won't recognize, say, a...

    Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s

There are currently 15 signalized intersections between Laird and Kennedy that you're suggesting we should have tunneled under. That would most certainly add a ton to the project. Utility relocation being a huge expense nobody ever thinks about, plus the actual act of tunneling, mining, or...

    Toronto Bike Share

One of my biggest complaints is how they basically hide the stations in the back of parking lots, off the street, etc. I'm sure they couldn't negotiate more prime real estate away from parked cars, etc, so having more stations is better than none at all. However, in the absence of that, I wish...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

For real? When I first got it, I tracked how many trips I made that I also would have made on transit (so not counting short trips I would have walked, or not made at all), and the full price annual membership paid for itself in un-used TTC tokens within less than 2 months. It's a steal of a...

TTC: Flexity Streetcars Testing & Delivery (Bombardier)

Oh man. Bombardier is right beside a huge pulp and paper mill that has a very distinctive foul odor the blankets much of the southern part of the city. I used to drive by it every day growing up, so I got used to it, but so many visitors would be floored. Wouldn't be surprised if the streetcars...

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

Not sure why Bikeshare being not for everybody means we should entirely write it off and dismiss it as being awful. I love it. Thousands do too. Driving isn't for everybody, but we somehow obsess over maintaining the status quo on that.

    Cycling infrastructure (Separated bike lanes)

You really should never have to worry about losing a bike. Just make sure you dock it properly (a green light will flash when you do). If you're planning on locking it up elsewhere, BikeShare probably isn't for you. That's just not the way it was designed. The closest I come to that is when I...

No, but the structures are being built to support them in the future if someone decides they should be added.

    TTC: New Fare Gate Installation

Donlands is doing the same thing right now as well. They put one of those non-velvet rope things up in front of the collector and funneling people who don't want to swipe/tap through to the closest fare gate, which opens automatically.
