TTC: Other Items (catch all)

Why were those closures canceled?

In any case, better get them out the way before Line 1 ridership ramps up in the fall

Because the union was refusing to do overtime so the shuttles couldn't be run.

They are continuing now because more drivers have been hired.

Unfortunately subway closures will continue the rest of the year.

Why were those closures canceled?

The shuttle buses used to be run with drivers who signed up for overtime hours. The union stopped letting drivers do that, so the TTC couldn't get enough shuttle buses to replace the subway.

These closures happen on weekends, so if anything ridership is probably lower in the fall than it is in the summer.

Hold on. Wasn't Line 1 near Eglinton supposed to be closed for a whole week this summer? Am I imagining this?
There was talk of doing that last year for this year, but it was kill, as it would cause too much problems all around. It was replace by doing a number of weekends, but been kill some what by the Union who will not allow overtime to do it.

TTC has supposed to hire a number of drivers for these closures now, but still a hit and miss. We had one last weekend, another this weekend, with another after that. Unknown what is next at this stage for Aug.

As for Dufferin Express, if from Bloor north, those stops are the right one. If for the whole route, you need King, Queen, Dundas, College as well.

The route should be Bloor - Dupont - St Clair - Rogers - Eglinton - Lawrence - Yorkdale - Wilson.

That's basically the route. There's also a stop at Castlefield, and the Yorkdale stop is at Orfus Road.

South of Dufferin is where there are more stops. It makes the two Dufferin Mall stops, College, Dundas, Queen, King, Liberty Street and the Exhibition Loop.

NOOOOO I knew they would fuck it up. South of Dufferin does not need and should not have express bus. It's not nearly as heavily dependent on the getting to the Bloor Danforth line as there are FOUR streetcar lines.

South of Bloor, there are only three stops that are not served by the express bus. There might not be anywhere convenient to loop the buses at Dufferin Station, but in that case, the 29E should only go as far south as Dundas/College, looping via Sheridan Avenue, with one stop at Dufferin Mall, and a stop or two to connect with the 505/506. On the south end, have a separate branch between the Exhibtion and Dupont to provide supplemental service for the more local needs on the south end of the corridor not served by the express.

There are no change to the stops south of Bloor because the ridership patterns are such that there are very few - basically those three - stops that have a substantially lower ridership. And to boot, ridership doesn't really drop off until Dundas or Queen, so you need to have a similar headway to what is there today.

Having a branch that runs from the Ex to Dupont doesn't really help, as it would require more buses (due to more overlap), and to be honest a very healthy proportion of the ridership on the route travels from points south of Bloor to points north - thus why there has never been any serious plans to separate the route and build an off-street bus loop.

The point of this express is not to provide any express service south of Bloor - because as everyone has noted, there's no point - but rather to try and save a bus or two on the section to the north and still provide an equivalent service.

They might call the route 129 Dufferin. Also if it’s express why not go all the way to Steeles.

Would be better if the Dufferin North bus went to Wilson instead for a convenient connection between the 2 Dufferin busses.

No. 29E.

I'm assuming that ridership patterns don't justify that. Extending the route makes it harder to manage headways, and duplicates part of the subway, so there would need to be a lot of people travelling north from Sheppard West station (and there isn't).
