Toronto Union Station Revitalization | ?m | ?s | City of Toronto | NORR

No end date :(
CityNews report

I can see the work being used as an example of how not to do things. The revitalization is and was needed but the way it was handled in terms of contracts and execution was bungled.

It will look good when finished but that needs to be done sooner rather than later.

Take a look at the Great Hall. It is nowhere near completed. They did the walls and then stopped. Nothing on the floors for example, work just stalled.

Of course it's not finishing :)

The train station itself (where trains go) is DOA. Either RER changes (or disappears) or another cool billion will need to be spent to make the station functional for RER.

We live in a fantastic city.

Such lazy reporting. They could have, at the very least, contacted Metrolinx and asked for the latest schedules.

I don't think they would have got any answers anyways. It seems like both Metrolinx and the City of Toronto don't even know.
The work on Union Station itself is a City project and it is probably true that they do not know what is going on - Bondfield are the main contractor and they are having serious financial 'challenges' on this and many other projects (the St Mikes extension is another). At least on some projects their insurers are apparently paying subs to get work done. According to G&M the Union Station project is 9 months behind, as of mid September. See: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/bus...ontractor-woes-stall-ontario-public-projects/

Both this and the St Mikes project's seem to have significantly sped up again in the past month. After months of little to no movement on St Michaels, they have now mostly finished exterior cladding on the east side, put up signage, and performed a lot of other tasks.

For Union, people have noted that the food court is suddenly moving quite quickly towards completion.

Well it’s scheduled to open next month

Passing through union over the weekend i took a few photos of the station construction. Not much has changed since April.

First is a peek through a door at what once was the ford tunnel. An escalator from what will be the lower bay concourse is visible.

Second is a look in to the Bay concourse from the Bay st construction access area. Again stairs a visble between levels. Excuse the overexposed foreground, i had to up the exposure to get detail in the building.

The fitting out of the food court is NOT being done by Bondfield - or the City. It is dealt with by either the "Head Leasee" (Osmington) or the future tenants. See: https://www.retail-insider.com/retail-insider/2018/2/union-station-toronto

Once the infrastructure is completed, once there's a "blank canvass" ready, the rest will fill in quite rapidly. It would be nice to know an end date but they've been moving at a good steady pace in the last year.

I noticed today that they seem to be erecting a plywood partition in middle of the west Front Moat. (Running east to west), A bit hard to see but they may be planning to open half of it? (I think the half nearest station buikding.) It may be easier to see at night if the lights are on so if someone is there.....

Been a well I have been here and about time for screens. Not sure about the T and not the best shots as the lens crap out during the day.

Nice, new easier-to-read electronic screens replacing old yellow dot matrix.

Death to all scrollers - being able to see the ENTIRE list of stops will make catching a Lakshore Weat easier.

There are many different Lakeshore West stopping sequences!

- Allstop to Aldershot
- Express to Clarkson, allstop to Aldershot
- Express to Clarkson, allstop to Hamilton Downtown
- Express to Oakville, allstop to Hamilton Downtown
- Express to Clarkson, allstop to West Harbour
- Niagara Seasonal (semi express)
- Exhibition Specials
- CanPa Detour Trains (Each with different stop sequences)

Infoboards must be designed carefully on this to make it easy-glance information. If they screw up the first time around, at least it's just a software upgrade to redesign layout and colors....

Worth rereading an earlier ost of mine about infoboard design ideas:

Don't forget platform entrance signage.

I hereby propose this doorway video signage, flexible enough to accommodate VIA & GO, as well as enough on-screen to indicate special trains (e.g. BLUE JAYS, NUIT BLANCHE, SUPERCRAWL, etc) with a new "special train" descriptor field. Here's a concept of the Future.

(And adding a cameo of a theoretical super-express weekday peak GO train of the year 2025):

Suggest it to Metrolinx instead of posting it on a public forum where they won't see it.
