The food court itself may open later this year, but I have my suspicion that the lower level is opening soon. I also suspect the current corridor to Union Plaza will close, and its second half will open leading to the lower level + stairs up to the concourse area leading to platforms 26/27.

Yes, that seems very probable and really no point in all the recent floor scrubbing and mopping that has been going on if the whole area is not opening for 6 months,
 
Regarding the existing bollards, I'm fairly positive they are purely cosmetic (they're definitely not concrete).

I've seen a few of them that have been hit by vehicles. They just bend right over.
Like the flexi-bollards all over Toronto on the bike lanes. It gives cause to think when you see how incredibly flimsy they are, so much so that they just bend or break-off, and how many are in exactly that state.

It's a sick joke...
Re barriers: My preference would actually be to find a bike rack (like the circular ones that you find all over the place downtown) that is thick enough that it can double as a bollard to prevent a vehicle from going through it.
Exactly! And that kind of 'stealth' approach should be used universally in places like Union Station, roads, pretty much everywhere. Instead of catering to hysterical reaction (some of which is warranted) it should just be inherent in good design practice. Bus shelters immediately come to mind.

Maybe they want to roll out the red carpet welcome to vendors shopping for space. Might as well open-house it to prospective mall vendors and restaurants.

Part of the space will open soon though, and people are going to gawk down hallways and the walled-off "OPENING SOON, #AMCEBRGRZ" fancy wraps and the ilk, even if only one side of the food court is open. So need to Mr. Clean the whole shebang.

I think the lower level is going to finally be a partial pedestrian expressway to the TTC hopefully by the end of this year. Much of Bay Concourse will be still be walled off but we will finally stop using the Leather Shop Bypass (finally!).

^ Hmm... very interesting.

Another potential possibility: Maybe they're just planning to make use of the central court at present? I could see them making use of this space for promotional pop-ups temporarily, like they do with the "west wing" up above, or in small-scale in the york street promenade.

From a marketing perspective, it would certainly draw a lot of attention since the space is very visible from the concourse level

EDIT: Nix that idea. The way the curtains are positioned, it doesn't look like elevator access would be available for the central court.
 
If one looks at the maps in Post 5138 you see this one.

If I read it right (do I?), one would get from the Food Court that is being polished-up and into the West Moat (and from there to the TTC entrance in the East Moat. Giving this new access route would mean they could shut off some of the current routes and do work on the Bay Street side.

I've mentioned before that the two levels of the Unions Station maps are quite misleading as the Food Court doesn't actually have direct access to the York Street Promenade nor the Front West Moat. It is only accessible by going up escalators as the York Street Promenade is technically at the same level as the York Concourse, which are connected by a small ramp.

As it stands now it gets pretty crowdes in the via concourse with commuters travelling through the area crossing paths with via passengers lined up to board their trian.

Ive noticed that they occasionally close the south access doors to the via concourse (from the telus building access), forcing people into the york concourse. So it wouldnt surprise me to see them open up the food court and then permanently close access to the via concourse.

How would opening the food court do much in diverting people? Unless they open a lot and have something like this:

Magenta route probably can work, but Lime route would require substantial completion of the Bay Concourse area.

I was in York Concourse area today and two white hats were looking at the escalators going down to the 'food court'. I overheard part of their conversation: "The part is on order and will be shipped today; it should be installed by Friday and the escalators can open." I ASSUME they meant the escalators going to food court but I guess we will see.
