Didn't they do regular checks? How could 14 trains get the same problem all at the same time? Did they cut back on doing checks to save on maintenance costs?
I guess this is something that Alstom has to answer for since they are the operators

Yup... social media is causing undue pandemonium in an otherwise trivial situation.
If anything this is more on Alstom being the operators than on ML, which people like to scapegoat for every setback that occurs here...
Alstom has a contract with Metrolinx. If they are failing to meet the terms of the contract, it is on Metrolinx to correct that, or seek damages, in such a way as the contract permits.

To the end user, whether it is materially the fault of Alstom or Metrolinx is irrelevant.

I agree we can't definitively blame Metrolinx here until more info comes out about why the brake discs failed like this.

But I wouldn't call it a trivial situation - our airport express rail system is completely offline for the indefinite future. This is a very big deal!

SERVICE ALERT:
UP Express guests: Train service has been replaced by GO bus service due to required maintenance on our UP Express trains.
There is 15-minute express GO bus service between Pearson and Union Station. Weston and Bloor customers should take the TTC.
Please do not use the Trip Planner function on the Up Express App.
We appreciate your patience as we take steps to ensure UP Express services remain among the safest and most reliable in North America.

The TTC just announced they are increasing service on the 900 during the UP Express disruption for the weekend.
Everyone needs to think about the situation here. These cars are a unique set, they are non standard vs the rest of the fleet. They don't have 800 other cars to swap with it something goes wrong.
This happened with the LRC's in the 90's with cracked axles. Nobody blamed VIA at that point.
But the issue here is due to high platforms they cannot swap them with other cars in the fleet.

We live in a world today post pandemic where cold medicine and baby formula is not available on the shelf. The same could be with disk brakes.
Maybe they were a bad batch. Maybe they kept them in service longer because parts were not available.

UPX Is not servicing Weston and Bloor Station at this time

Since these 2 stations are out of service and a train every hourly, ML most likely try to get away with either a 2 car train with 2 as spares until more are brought back on line or move to an 3/4 train.

GO could run trains to those stations just can't use the airport spur.

What about the weekend?? They do for weekday, but no help for those going to/from the airport at this time. Someone was on the phone at Weston looking for a ride as there was no service there today.

Well it's TTC territory so ... they could take the TTC... But where at Union are buses departing? The bus terminal?

That's quite the trek for the uninitiated.

If Metrolinx were being transparent, that would be a fair comment. But they aren't. As far as I know, they haven't even commented on the cause of this.[QUOTE="W. K. Lis, post:
