I've noticed the use of the term "parkade" at Square One recently, and now here too. Seems rather strange to me. I know it's a Canadian word, but I've only heard it in the last few years.

I was actually talking to some friends about "Canadian words" a few weeks ago and brought up parkade. None of them had even heard of it, which sort of surprised me. I normally use parking garage, but I have heard of parkade before.

You know, that's actually true. I guess I took the common use of the word for granted. In construction (esp. ICI), we've been referring to them as parkades for quite a while. But now that I think of it, a lot of people refer to them as parking garages.

Parking deck is the more american way to say it IIRC. There really are a bunch of names for the same thing.

In Canada we have always called them Parkades. I have never seen a parkade in Toronto that's called a "parking ramp"

Parking garage is most common in my experience. It's possible that "parkade" was once more common and has survived in certain old Toronto neighbourhoods with more older-generation Canadians. In the Annex, the older generation call apartment buildings "apartment houses", though it's to hear that phrase anywhere else in the city.

When we lived in Montreal, in the 1960's and 1970's, it was the the parking garage behind the Bay store was the 'Bay Parkade' - the term has been around for a while.

Parkade sounds awkward to me though. I'd take "carpark" over parkade, but I'll continue saying "parking garage" (or "parking structure" as GO calls them).
