Wished this pergola/canopy was designed and somewhat relating to the building. It just looks like frame work for a garden shed or tent -- a really poor afterthought. But then again this entire development is a poor afterthought.

You nailed it right on the head. It looked like a temporary walkway you'd see at TIFF.

Maybe it's a reference to the original white military barracks structure that stood at that site, the foundations of which will be visible to visitors who walk under the canopy.

From a Globe article describing the project and history of the site: "The foundations of the white barracks buildings will be incorporated into the design for a new hotel."

Maybe it's a reference to the original white military barracks structure that stood at that site, the foundations of which will be visible to visitors who walk under the canopy.

No "maybe" about it, the frame outlines the space where the old barracks building stood, and the walkway through the space allows the visitor to see the unearthed foundations of the old barracks below them. That's a nice gesture. The problem is that the new building around it is such an unfriendly, hulking industrial mass in a part of the city where we are supposed to be celebrating.

Yeah it's like we just forgot the concept of the Exhibition altogether. Where we used to demonstrate our most fanciful and important architecture, we now have something that seems to say "that era is behind us". We're not adding to the display here, instead quite the opposite. It's like the idea is just to admire the days of old instead of striving for greatness again. That might make sense if there were no good designs, but that's simply not true, Hariri Pontarini could have done something splendid here, but instead this important tract of land was awarded to the lowest bidder. FFS.

Well, they are also the ones that brought you the bunker of a Raptor's training facility. Quite frankly, the Ex board got some explaining to do - it's being treated like the place where bad architecture goes to die.

"green gabled pergola" - It'll likely depend on the cladding for the canopy.
I wonder if it'll be made up of green walls (i.e. living plants).
The renderings for it show a vivid green structure with punched out windows (i.e. like barracks building) (but it looks a bit odd).
