Toronto Crosstown LRT | ?m | ?s | Metrolinx | Arcadis

While I agree that it's likely too late, I don't think at-surface LRT construction has started yet, only tunnel.

The contract for the surface section & underground stations is currently in the bidding process where Metrolinx works with the bidders. The contract is finalized spring 2015 with construction for those things starting later in 2015.

It's still likely too late for major changes, but the surface part hasn't started construction, currently only the tunnel is.

Rob Plans to bury Eglinton East. I don't know how that will go, but he does.

Rob and Doug say lots of things but their ability to execute is lacking.

The best they will be able to do is keep it as bus service. They may try to start an EA but promptly forget about it (dog with a puffy tail walked past) and it'll sit.

I don't see what relevance the plans of a crack-smoking racist have to do with anything. He had similar plans when he was elected in 2010 that came to nought. It's not like he's going to have any more authority over council if he does actually get re-elected.

Let's focus on plausible scenarios here.

His original plan in 2010 was to not build anything on Eglinton. So clearly his plan did not come true.

What I think is hilarious is that the "cut-the-gravy-train" mayor is advocating for the most expensive and over-built option while the "spend-spend-spend socialist" candidates are advocating for the most fiscally prudent option. That says a lot about Ford's morality and commitment to his beliefs. He's doesn't care one wit about cutting-the-gravy-train. He only cares about getting himself elected so he can funnel the gravy train into his own mouth.

They are working on the portal first. Part of the current hole they are digging will be outside. It's in the middle of Eglinton, and can no longer be moved, without building a very expensive and completed interchange at Leslie and Egilnton.

And that brings things back to my first post in this string.

  1. Of course there will be some wasted money

  1. Will the amount of extra money spent to move the portal (or built the interchange the you suggest) exceed the amount of money that would be saved by cancelling the B-D subway extension and switching to SRT.
At this point, and even 6 to 12 months from now, I imagine the extra money to move the portal location would be minimal compared to the savings and the effect on the schedule relatively minor.

This option was defeated by and is opposed by:

  1. The Provincial Government
  2. City Council
  3. TTC and Metrolinx
  4. 2 of the top 3 mayoralty candidates, representing 60% of polling support.

This third option is not available because it is opposed by almost every group and it is proven that if it is tabled it will be defeated.

For one, the Eglinton east part is already under construction so this is just a rehash of the Scarborough subway/LRT debate.

1. The provincial government will go with whatever the city wants. They waffled before and they'll waffle again. See what KW's response was when asked if they'd go back on the subway.
2. City Council voted 24-20 for the subway. The three principle backers of that (Stintz, DoFo, RoFo) will not be on council this time next year. This all depends on council's composiiton in 2015, which I sincerely doubt will be as Scarborough subway friendly.
3. Here is Metrolinx saying that light rail was the best solution. Here is the TTC's report, where they state a preference for it, and that they are still working on it. Where are you getting that they're opposed?
4. RoFo is probably off the table. Tory said the scarborough subway was "barely justifiable". I'll admit that it comes down to whether Tory or Chow wins the mayoralty.

The "third option" of Scarborough LRT is still technically on the books as the official plan, as per the master agreement.

I doubt it Tory will have a major problem getting city council to do what he wants if he is elected. Rob Ford only had trouble getting city council to go his way because he made such a fool of himself. Under normal circumstances, the mayor controls the executive committee and can exercise quite a bit of leverage through that. Tory has already promised the Scarborough subway and to cancel the Sheppard/Finch LRTs while leaving Eglinton alone, so I assume that's what will happen if he gets elected. He obviously wants to shift money towards GO train expansion.

It's not just Ford, it's many, MANY so called "fiscal conservatives".

Then Ford and McGunity decided to bury everything. And then Ford gave up Eglinton for some reason. And then lost on Sheppard East and then got a win on Bloor/Danforth/McCowan

It will be definitely interesting to see what happens in the new year. I think Chow will win and she will push for the LRT, and she will get it barring some unforseen circumstance.

Ford traded the province burying Eglinton, and cancelling the Finch and Sheppard LRTs for City building subway from Scarborough Centre to Don Mills station. But the færies magical corporate free money for the Sheppard subway never appeared, and the city never reached a deal with the province. All it did was set Sheppard East LRT back 5 more years.
