TO is now 2nd most expensive city in North America

Yes, but that article is about a study by GaWC that was done in 1999. Here is the results. I find these results disputable and am surprised by how high we are on this list. However, this is from 1999, and Beijing for example has probably jumped from a gamma to beta city, so the rankings are not the best to cite.

Even if you ignore the study, the city still meets the criteria in the article.

I agree our recognition in the study. Our financial, cultural, and education institutions definitely have some significance on the world stage.

You would seriously put Toronto in the same class as New York, Paris, or Berlin? Is that your opinion? Scary. Sounds like fighting words.

In all the years of posting here I'm not sure I've ever seen Toronto compared in a serious way to New York, London, Paris or Tokyo. Because we just don't.

Best not to get too hung up on "rankings", though they are very popular right now.

Berlin? I guess it depends on what your criteria are. Berlin's unique experience in the 20th century led to a heck of a lot of investment in remaking it into the image of a European capital, which has led to some great architecture and fabulous spaces and monuments. Lots of history, culture, nightlife. But even within Germany, Berlin punches below its economic weight, and the anticipated moves of head offices to the city just didn't happen. It's an odd city for dichotomy in particular to have named Berlin in his question above, given the city's well documented problems with debt and unemployment despite the enormous infusion of federal dollars to the capitalm, and his frequent disparaging comments about Toronto's economic malaise.

I myself am unconcerned with rankings or status groupings. Toronto is what it is, I chose to live here because, within Canada, it suited me best. I love the city and what it has to offer, and in my years here I've loved watching it grow and change.

Touche.

Which gets me thinking we should have a contest for who can come up with the best such post. We could brainstorm a list of possible terms such as:

-World Class
-Melting Pot
-Bland
-Centre of the Universe
-Decline
-etc.

Help me out here.

Like OMG, I just got back from visiting my cousin who works for an IT firm in Dubai and that place rooooooooooooolz. Unlike Toronto, their really living up to their potenshul. They are now bilding the tallest tower in the world, which is already much taller than the CN tower. Eat that, bitchez!!! They also have waaay more better world-class shopping (like, why is the good part of Bloor street so short) and no homeless people. ZERO! Everywhere you go there are cranes it is like skyscraper porn LOL ROFLMAO!!!!!! And I also heard they are building this new high speed monorail thing that is like way better than our retarded two and a half lines of dumbass subway (why did they build that thing in North York to nowhere? Like who is going to take that unless they want to go to IKEA). Finaly, I saw people from all diferent races working there together and as much as Toronto likes to say that it is the most diverstest place it is not. It is way behind Dubai in this regard. Anyway, to sum up my 3 days in Dubai:

Dubai: New center of the universe, supercharged place where every minute your there feels like an orgasm times infinity

Toronto: rapidly declining into toilet of the world, only homeless bums and squeegee kids will be living there in ten years.

A seasoned traveller friend of mine visited Dubai and said it is all too new and has no soul. Yes, lots of urban superlatives and all those diverse peoples working together have absolutely no rights in Dubai and frequently don't get paid. Yes, it is an amazing futuristic place and I would love to go there on a three-day architecture porn tour, but not yet.

"If I had the money I be in Vancouver.Toronto is my birth place but Vancouver is where I can really have the best of both worlds (nature and city living).I'm so tired of Toronto trying to pass it self as a "world class city",it was clean and safe once but that was 10 years ago.Unless we get people who can actually plan a city for the future instead of patch work BS we might be in the same league as the true "world class cities" on this planet.Toronto is a true melting pot of all the races on this world that actually gets a long but we have too many people who has large egos and personally agendas to make this a great city."

I'm sorry ducati0000 to poke fun, I'm sure this is your honest opinion, but I think long time members of this forum would agree that that post has a humorous density of eye rolling phrases and mis-conceptions. Which gets me thinking we should have a contest for who can come up with the best such post. We could brainstorm a list of possible terms such as:

Toronto is probably the worst Canadian city in the world. Why would anyone want to live in such a crowded, polluted mess? Life here in Waterloo is relaxing and you can easily have over two acres of your own land for the price of a closet in Toronto.... This is Canada, not Hong Kong, no one wants to live in 200 sq ft hell-hole hundreds of feet in the air... Why doesn't the communist Ontario government just let people live in the country and enjoy nature, it's much more environmentally friendly.

And another thing, if Toronto really wants to be 'world class' it should stop trying to please the creme de la creme liberal yuppies and build some real roads... why didn't it just tear down buildings along streets like Yonge and Bloor and build wider roads 70 years ago when it had the chance.... every real global city built 6-8 lane roads around the city long ago, but all toronto planners can do is worship ancient modes bikes and trains instead of moving into the 20th century... the city is building 50 storey eyesores everywhere without building any roads or new expressways.... we need to look to the Houston model, they have some of the most headquarters of any city in North America

Thinking of living in that crime-ridden ghetto makes me physically ill... they should just raze the city and start over.

Yes, exactly, Urbanista1

One of my friends said the exact same thing when he went.
The only place that he said that was remotely interesting was the mosque, which he wasn't allowed to go into since he wasn't Muslim.

If I didn't see his name attached to it, I would almost take Hipster's clever satirical post as the real thing. Well done!

Do we have to start another 20 page thread about Toronto being world class again? How often do these posts come along these days? Every 2 months?

One thing I have noticed is how many places are raising prices to levels beyond London or New York. I visited a few bars lately that have charged $6.50 for a bottle of domestic beer! Not to mention the amount of retail spaces currently open for leasing.

Oh, dear lord where to start?

Toronto is probably the worst Canadian city in the world. Why would anyone want to live in such a crowded, polluted mess? Life here in Waterloo is relaxing and you can easily have over two acres of your own land for the price of a closet in Toronto....

Not everyone shares the same views on living arrangements. Many people want less car-dependancy, and don't need an excess home and amount of land. Waterloo is quaint, but it gets stale after a while. It lacks excitement and plentiful entertainment, unlike a major city.

This is Canada, not Hong Kong, no one wants to live in 200 sq ft hell-hole hundreds of feet in the air... Why doesn't the communist Ontario government just let people live in the country and enjoy nature, it's much more environmentally friendly.

Clearly people do want to live in "200 sq ft hell-hole [apartments] hundreds of feet in the air" because, well just look at the sales. They sell out in many occasions, with people lining up around city blocks to be first in line to buy. Also, since when does the Ontario government impede people from living in the country and enjoying nature. If I recall correctly, there are still thousands and thousands of untouched acres of land to live on, as well as people already doing so. Lastly, the point about environmental friendliness is a little off; sprawl and oversized homes on big plots of land ravage the environment a lot more than building dense in urban centers, especially with newer greener building standards.

Tell me, how many 6-8 lane roads do you see criss-crossing through London, or Paris. Even America's best cities like Chicago or New York have similar road widths as us, with a focus on pedestrians and streetlife. To say we should've torn down buildings to create gigantic, cumbersome roads through the densest parts of our city tells me you understand almost nothing about city building. Also, what exactly is ancient about bikes and trains? Are you saying rail transit should be obsolete, bikes for pleasure cruises, and the car is the way of the future? I think the 1950s called, it wants its ideals back.

the city is building 50 storey eyesores everywhere without building any roads or new expressways.... we need to look to the Houston model, they have some of the most headquarters of any city in North America

Eyesores, well that's subjective. Most people (including a lot of Toronto's 2.5 million residents) prefer density and urbanity, to massive roadways and seas of parking lots. I can't say a lot for Houston, but last time I checked Toronto is Canada's major economic urban centre, with a large amount of national and international headquarters and offices. Not to mention top educational, scientific, and medical facilities centred downtown.

Thinking of living in that crime-ridden ghetto makes me physically ill... they should just raze the city and start over.

Crime ridden? Ghetto? I don't even think I'll address these points, as they make me believe you've never actually been to Toronto. If being one of the safest major cities in North America makes you a crime ridden ghetto, then I'd like to know what your idea of a safe, prosporous and ideal city is.

^Relax. Waterloowarrior's post was obviously sarcastic as was anyone else who replied directly to Tricky's original post.

I think it was, but Waterloo's and Hipster's clever posts both got us over "the same old" very quickly and efficiently, and your rebuttal was well done anyways.

TWO satirical posts in one day? come on guys this is just too much. I need a nap. For the record, I definitely thought both were sincere. I need to spend more time on UT.
