No, casaguy, I am not being sarcastic. The Square was a roaring success with ordinary Torontonians from the get-go and it is a delightful urban space that is always well used.

The vulgar rubbish that surrounds it is another matter - a cautionary lesson in what rampant commercialism spawns, to which there is an alternative.

I like the idea of TIFF @ Toronto Life Square, specially because it will force them to beautify the building to host Toronto's and Hollywood's glitteratti.

On the other hand, Yonge St. has character, but common, do we really want the World's eyes on countless dollar stores, cheesy electronics bizzars and ... hmmm the aweful Torch in the background?

When the Uptown theatre was used for TIFF that was by far a much junkier area of Yonge Street than Y+D Square area. AMC Cinemas is the next logical move for TIFF in bringing the festival cinema locations closer together. Mostly it would be used for smaller event presentations, repeat screenings, media/trade screenings etc. much like the Varsity & Cumberland have been used in the past. It's somewhat sad to see TIFF's connection to Yorkville end, that's where it all began.

Look how much fun these people are having! That guy sitting in the chair with his arms crossed on the far right in particular looks like he's having an absolute ball! Dundas Square is a complete success!

Nice attempt at sarcasm, but it actually *is* a success.

It is very well used at all hours, and the security guards have backed off considerably in recent years. Also, there aren't nearly as many private commercial events held there - putting the Square off limits from people who have become accustomed to using it - as there were at the beginning.

grey, when that AMC opens up don't hang around Dundas Square if you don't like frenetic crowds.

Imagine Scotiabank Theatre on steroids.

One never quite knows what to expect at YDS and that's part of its appeal. I was fortunate enough to pass by when they were teaching the rudimentary moves for Bollywood dancing. You should see me shake my shoulders now - world class! Sushmita Sen had better watch out!

I've killed some time in Dundas Square, and have enjoyed watching the people. You usually see kids playing in the fountains, groups of people relaxing at the tables or on the benches, tourists waiting for their open-air bus tours or at the ticket booth checking out what's playing, and the crowds are always busy in front of the Eaton Centre and along Yonge. The Yonge/Dundas area is starting to feel like what it should be, a crossroads. So, of course everybody is entitled to their opinion, but I'm not exactly sure what Grey is looking for? Pea-gravel allees??

Well of course it doesn't look like those people are having fun. It's a still photograph. Although, Toronto is a very conservative city...

As for YD Square... it feels like it's missing something, I can't quite put my finger on it.

I know it's actually well-used, especially when events are held there. I was joking about the photo, which makes it look like Dundas Square barely rivals Square One.

It needs a tenant in the Torch building. lol..that's what's missing.

I still don't understand why they would build an Olympic history centre in a city that has never hosted them. Even the prices they were charging were ridiculous.

Anyways, I'm sure it's been mentioned before but I'd love MTV to move into that building, it's a way better location then Masonic Temple. Just like MTV USA is located in Times Square in NYC, MTV Canada should be located in Canada's busiest intersection.

I wonder if this is even remotely viable???

Didn't 3D mention something about Google moving their headquarters to Torch? ( relatively soon)

Google is all about advertising, and what a better place to locate your brand than Dundas Square.

personally, the thing missing for me is something green. the whole area is very very grey (the ground surface i mean, not the brightly colored ads).even if they had planters or something, it woud make the place a lot better imo.
