St. James Park Re-Sodded By Volunteers

McConnell acted in accordance with the wishes of her constituents. The vast majority of phone calls she received from residents and businesses of her ward during the protest were pro-occupy.

So did the unions pay for the re-sodding? Who am I kidding. Of course we'll be stuck with the tab. God bless socialism.

I'm pretty sure (at least from all the news articles I've read) that the bill was picked up entirely by the sodding companies who donated everything and by the volunteers who did it for free. City saved $60,000 in the end. Or $20,000 if they had just re-seeded (which wouldn't have looked nearly as nice).

Ironically enough, it was resources from capitalism that cleans up the mess the occupiers made... I've still yet to see the amount the occupiers supposedly donated to the local bia... i'm gonna guess an optimistic of 1000.00... i highly doubt their even at the 100 dollar mark...

You've overbid. The correct answer is $0.

But look at all the extra business they brought to the area. I'm sure many of the local businesses would miss them .... other than one or two who charge $30 for a lunch entrée, which 99% of us can't afford.

I can't imagine too many others would complain about their presence! I work very close to the park, and it certainly didn't cause any inconvenience - other than the day the Police decided to shut it down, and created traffic havoc.

The councillor will only know what the wishes of her constituents really are at the next election. Most of us probably don't call or write our local politicians to express our views every time an issue crops up. In some cases people don't care enough, or feel they have enough going on in their personal lives already. In other cases, especially when party affiliations are clear (as in provincial or federal politics), you might believe it's pointless to express your opinion to a politician who will vote along with the party whip in any case. I'm not saying that's how I am personally, but I suspect that 99% of the population feels that way, and I feel confident in speaking on behalf of that 99% ;)

Seriously, though. I do believe that all of the various identifiable funders of the usage of the park should be held legally responsible for the costs associated with the park's closure. I know that there was a statement from OPSEU about being open to talk about giving some money toward the cost, but I don't know any more on that issue. I don't think it should be about politics, just about being good neighbours or respectful visitors. It is admirable that private companies or individuals came forward to try to restore the park, but those who enabled the long-term use of the area should have come forward from the beginning.

Does anybody here realize that park was not in good shape before OT? Go take a look at Berczy Park and you will see what this park looked like before tent city. It had lots of mud patches and the grass was in terrible shape. I've been complaining to Pam McConnell for years about the state of both parks, as well as the parks along The Esplanade and I just keep hearing that it's not in the budget plans. It seems we can't afford nice grass, decent lighting, well maintained benches and functioning drinking fountains in St. Lawrence. It's not like Occupy Toronto destroyed a well maintained, beautiful park. The only part of St. James Park that was in pretty good shape, was the small fountain area, near King Street. The rest of it was pretty pathetic.

I'm glad this happened and now we'll finally get a park with some nice grass. Will the protesters PLEASE move to Berczy Park now, as that place has more sand pitts than actual grass. Oh, and fix the damned drinking fountains!
