Rob Ford's Toronto

As a side note, I wouldn't believe much of what Mammo says. It's likely exaggerated or taken out of context. This is a random cry for attention.

I wish to pass my hat tip (also, my impending Oscar) on to Sublime. I sent the link for the interview to Dale, Goldsbie and Peat (the first 2 responded; Peat was 'radio silent', to use a Dougism), but only because the hard slogging that Sublime did to live-blog it (so to speak) on UT revealed that it goes even beyond the usual Mammo.

From Sun News Network
A Freedom of Information request filed by QMI Agency for the Internet histories of all staff in the mayor's office including Ford between May 1, 2013, and August 6, 2013, turned up nothing for the mayor himself.

Ford does have a computer on his office desk but he wasn't using it last year in the midst of the start of his crack cocaine scandal.

"Please be advised that there were no records of Internet activity related to Mayor Ford's user ID," city staff told QMI in response to the FOI request.

Coun. Doug Ford — the mayor's campaign manager — explained the mayor's lack of online activity.

"He doesn't go on the Internet," Ford said Thursday. "He doesn't turn on a computer. He's just not into it."

Sorry Doug. He's the freaking mayor. Mayors get emails and need to respond. Work is done on computers, it being the modern age and all. Executives don't get to choose to not be "into" computers. They're not toys. So I guess you're telling me Rob doesn't actually do any work.

He just seems...nuts.

Well said.

+1 in terms of non-sexist name calling. But I think it is better if we keep the name calling and swearing to a minimum. Everyone here is pretty bright. We don't need to use language that is unintelligent.

I used the F-word in front of my mother once. I was too young to know what it meant. But, she made me promise to never use it in front of a woman again.

That's why David Price was hired at $130,000 p.a. - to answer e-mails.

I agree on "minimum", which is,however, higher than none. Sometimes a cuss word is the most intelligent response, but not usually. :p The Ford's test the limits of my "gentleman" line daily.

I also enjoy the occasional scathing and profane polemic, so I expect NOONE to care what I think the line is.

I miss Ford news :(

This business of Rofo not using computers is just so weird. Does he avoid them to ensure he doesn't leave a trail of his many vices, or is he a simpleton who is frightened of newfangled technology? I really wouldn't know what to guess.

Thinking about this fact is similar to thinking about logical paradoxes, the axiom of choice, or the origins of the universe. My mind is simply unable to comprehend the idea that the mayor of a large city doesn't use computers or the internet in the year 2014 and gets warped into a knot. It's not even a concept I could dream about because in my mind it doesn't exist. Maybe I ought to start experimenting with hallucinogens?

I'm thinking that this must be treated as axiomatic (or close to it). It's a lot easier to explain his craziness starting from the fact he doesn't use computers than the other way around. For an obvious starter, it helps to explain his obvious ignorance. But deeper than that, he must have become increasingly isolated from the rest of society over the past decade, living in his own little bubble. No doubt that's contributed to his increasing substance abuse, and increasing dislike of his own life and disdain for everything around him. Imagine how bored and miserable he must get when everyone around him is entertaining themselves online, leaving him with nothing but television and his constituent calls.

I wonder if his rehab councillors will work on getting him up to speed on technology. I know you're supposed to be cut off from the outside world for a while, but if he ended up spending the better part of his days addicted to watching porn, posting on football forums, and reading about conspiracy theories, his life would probably be a lot better.

This is consistent with Rob being marginally literate. We know he doesn't read or prepare much if at all and can only speak from notes written in big type with lots of boldface. People who can't read or have a learning disability find jobs where they can talk a lot - like sales careers. Rob's principal work tool is his phone. Has anyone ever seen him use it to text?

ETA Responding to story about Rob not using his work computer.

Reminds me of Bill Clinton, who only sent something like two emails while in office. One was a test and the other was to sign an e-sig bill into law. But that was 20 years ago.

Maybe he only ever browsed in privacy mode - Towhey would have been smart enough to make sure there wasn't a trail.

Wanna bet that Doug does not use a computer either? (Thought not.)
