I hate when that rag lands on my porch. I have contacted almost all the advertisers, informing them that my family and friends would boycott their business as long as they advertise in that rag. Most don't even know the content of the publication, which spews hatred, racism, misinformation and a cringe-worthy fawning over the Fords.
 
Jim Coyle's column in the Star a couple of days back echoes what my former work colleague said about Ford's popularity with the "working class folks".

I found this quote interesting:
“Because the man is the only mayor in my 70-some-odd years in this city that is actually doing the job properly. Instead of a bunch of socialist morons spending us into the ground, making life hell and unbearable for the working poor, fuelling inflation to no end without even a thought of their reckless moves.”

Why does the left continue to allow this type of broad statement be made without challenge? Being a spendthrift is not a left or right ideology. It's what we spend public funds on that is the main source of disagreement. Right wing governments have left large deficits behind while left wing (rather left of center as we've never really had a "socialist" government) have left the public purse in good shape. It's the false connection that irritates the hell out of me.

The only difference to me is that right wing governments tend to prop up corporations and the rich with public funds and/or tax breaks while left wing governments use those funds to set up social safety nets and harm reduction programs.

Ford is neither of these things. He is really apolitical; a darling of the right for voting no to everything and railing against those stupid lefties, but a hero to those displaced by the economy. The fact that he votes no to things without ever understanding what he is voting against is stupefying but it indicates that he really has no interest at all in politics. I'd love to see any reporter question him about the content of any of the items which are supposed to be read before a vote. I'm sure he'd draw a blank.
 
Even beyond that, I'd really like to know what these people mean by "doing the job properly". Ask them for specifics, and all you'll get is the cancellation of the VRT. Then of course, it will be "he brought subways" -- well, to start with, those subways aren't even started yet and they will cost money. So how is that different from "spending us into the ground"? Not that Ford's supporters can ever answer those questions.

This 'everyone else is condescending' thing drives me to drink. With the exception of Miller, who always needed to be the smartest guy in the room, who are our 'condescending' Mayors? MEL? Barbara Hall? Rowlands? It's the weirdest thing -- if someone asked Mel a question about why the buses ran so slow, he'd give them an answer. Rob says, 'I'll get that fixed.' Now, the people KNOW HE WON'T. THEY KNOW HE'S LYING. But they just want a little sympathy on the spot, and the fact that when he leaves the room will be the last time he thinks about their question is OK, because they don't really think things will change.

People like Ford BECAUSE he's a screw-up and liar! It's got nothing to do with anyone else being 'condescending', it's all about their personal need to stick it in the eye of the 'Man'.

Feh. Quite frankly, I'd prefer condescending. Because at least the other politicians would actually be at fault in losing that vote. My problem is with the other candidates in the last election being so slimy and untrustworthy that non-Ford Nation voters, even with imperfect information about Ford, thought he was a better candidate.

In this election, that won't happen. You might not be enthused by Tory, Chow, Stintz, Soknacki, or the 18-year old, but everyone knows in their bones they're all better candidates than Ford. Even Ford Nation -- although they'll still vote for Ford to stick another red hot poker in everyone else's eye.

Exactly. They won't see it because they're so blinded by their fanaticism to stick it to some phantom "elites", while themselves being taken for suckers by a different "elite".

Great article, makes me crazy.

At the base of this sentiment is "I am not smart enough to do the very important work so get someone smart to do the work but make sure he carries himself like me so I don't feel bad".
