Rob Ford's Toronto

I can only imagine how few people tuned into the SunTV show. These guys really overestimate the level of civic engagement among Ford Nation.

Ford Nation has zero civic engagement: Rob and Doug got elected and therefore they should stay in office and be exempt from criticism until it's time to vote. Remember how few Fordites showed up at the public consultations on cuts, and how there was no real counter-protest when people chalked up NPS last fall? To Ford Nation, being politically engaged aside from voting is only for professional protesters: un(der)employed downtown lefty elites and union types with too much time on their hands.

Also, they'll listen to the FoBros if it's as easy as turning on a radio or TV talkback show as background noise; sitting at a computer and pulling up a YouTube video (one that doesn't allow comments, no less) is less appealing.

Most of the Ford Nation ppl I know are newish Canadians. Protesting, hanging out at CH etc doesn't suit them--they're just grateful to be here, have a job and raise a family. RF is their "tax cutting" hero. He does his job they do theirs.

Oh please, not this again. Rise and shine everyone! It's time for UT to wander onto the thread, the very sine qua non of know-nothingness.

"Most of the Ford Nation ppl I know": How many people are we talking about? 3? 5? 100? 1?

"Newish canadians": What countries are these Ford Nation supporters from that you are so tapped into? Name 3.

"Protesting, hanging out at CH etc doesn't suit them". No? Why not? Is it because they are "working like dogs"? How many "white people" do you see hanging out at CH?

"They're just grateful to be here": Why is that? Were they tortured back home? Do they come from "poor, brown countries"? What is the basis of their "gratitude"?

"RF is their "tax cutting" hero. He does his job they do theirs."
: Oh really? Why do these people think a spoiled, immature, lazy, fat, alcoholic, drug-addicted moron who has never had a real job in his life is their "hero"? Is it because they don't know any better? Are they stupid?

Anyway: here's where we last let off. With you admitting you have no idea what's going on.

re: me trolling. I don't have much time to read UT these days. I mostly post photos and fantasy renderings. I just happened to be reading the past few pages of this thread today on one of my "off days." Judging by the rantings of the newbies who've joined UT recently on this Rob Ford Rantfest, they strike me as the ones out of touch with reality....
...nor do I watch television or read any MSM. In fact really the only "news" I read is related to architecture and to a degree, development. Mostly European architects unveiling their next hot rendering or a tech firm unveiling a new Galaxy Note 7 or something.
I intentionally decided to tune out of the "lamestream" and tune into creating art--fantasy renderings :)--and focusing on being the world's snobbiest architecture critic.
Maybe Sarah Palin stole it from me?! It's like how I was the first person to call the King & Portland area Freedville and suddenly the "lamestream" media started using the term and feigned disbelief that it was I--the urbandreamer--who coined the term. This is one reason I am so cynical about them.

Actually I agree with urbandreamer. I know quite a few Pakistanis, Filipinos and south Asians and they seem to like ford. They dont see corruption as a negative thing because its gets the job done. Rob ford yelling at civic employees to fill in potholes and change street light bulbs is being proactive.

Rob ford being a homophobe does not the least bit hurt him in the suburbs in fact its probably the opposite. They see it as rob ford not bending to the agenda of lefty gay rights that they see shoved down peoples throat.

I'd suggest a better comparison is the Kingfish, Uncle Earl and the rest of the Louisiana Longs....

He's no Huey Long either:
http://www.hueylong.com/index.php

"And it is here, under this oak where Evangeline waited for her lover Gabriel, who never came. This oak is an immortal spot, made so by Longfellow's poem, but Evangeline is not the only one who has waited here in disappointment.

Where are the schools that you have waited for your children to have, that have never come? Where are the roads and highways that you send your money to build, that are no nearer now than ever before? Where are the institutions to care for the sick and disabled? Your tears in this country have lasted for generations. Give me the chance to dry the eyes of those who still weep here."

Right. That "they" see being shoved down people's throats.

The idea that it's primarily immigrants voting for Ford has been convincingly challenged by data showing immigrants and visible minorities are less engaged in politics than the visible majority.

http://www.socialistproject.ca/leftstreamed/ls204.php

In fact, studies actually show (in regards to all politics) that old, rich white men have the highest rates of political engagement. Most of the Ford supporters I know are white, usually older. A quick look at the "I hate the War on Mayor Rob Ford" Facebook page shows a high majority of whites (organizer Neill Flagg being a "rich white man" himself).

There's also the implication that his voters are ignorant.

That said, I think if you were to break down his voters, you'd see a higher majority of whites than other candidates. I truly believe he was voted in *because* his voters knew he wasn't "politically correct". Yes, there will be some less-civically minded minority voters casting ballots for Ford, but I think the heft of FordNation is ignorant whites who feel the machinery of political correctness has run over their "values".

Therein lies a gigantic issue. Do these people want to bring to Canada what they left their countries to avoid? Do the ends justify the means, even if the means ultimately corrode civic processes? Do we want patronage and nepotism as the ultimate result of this- and would we consider Ford to be promoting these values?

The 'lefty gay rights' issue is really not an issue- it's more about media raising a ruckus and Ford putting on a show.

No here is the weird part these individuals I'm talking about who I know personally have all been in Canada for more than 20 years-30years with kids born here.
They dont want to change Canada to their country they want to go back to the 1990s

Why would they imagine corruption as a positive thing? Is it the way they had to operate by in their home countries? Pakistan, India and the Phillipines aren't exactly known for their corruption-free governments. It's a tremendously slippery slope- sure, everyone hates bureaucracy, but if everyone's cutting in front, what's the point of it anymore? What's to stop me from going up to Ford and offering a campaign donation in exchange for my problems being fixed first? What's to stop someone like Ford asking for my vote in exchange for my problems to be fixed?

IMO the key to solving these problems is a more efficient bureaucracy and a better understanding of the ways of using the systems and tools that the government provides for us, not skirting the rules and looking for favours. The way Ford operates isn't the same as going back to the 90s.

Here is the average Wikipedian:

The common characteristics of average Wikipedians inevitably color the content of Wikipedia. The average Wikipedian on the English Wikipedia is (1) a male, (2) technically inclined, (3) formally educated, (4) an English speaker (native or non-native), (5) aged 15–49, (6) from a majority-Christian country, (7) from a developed nation, (8) from the Northern Hemisphere, and (9) likely employed as a white-collar worker or enrolled as a student rather than employed as a blue-collar worker.

That explains Neil Flagg's newfound obsession with Wikipedia and how Ford Nation people kept using the Wikipedia article of Rob Ford. Note that technically inclined can mean know how to use a computer and formally educated does not require post-secondary education.

Flagg and the rest of IHTWOMF crowd hate Wikipedia because it allows inconvenient and unflattering facts to be documented online that cannot easily or lastingly be fudged.
