Rob Ford's Toronto

yep, info on Dennis Morris representing Randy Ford in the kidnapping case was posted here around Aug 2013 (pg 1249 or so). Also noted in Kinsella's blog. That was back in 1986?? Morris is older than he looks, I guess?

It seems that Morris also represents Andre Gravelle of Hamilton. Gravelle is described as "A senior member of a Hamilton crime family, Gravelle has a record for drug and drug smuggling offences" (link at durhamregion.com) though he seems to have escaped the more serious murder charge:
http://www.thespec.com/news-story/2525347-andr-gravelle-11-others-charged-in-medical-marijuana-bust/

I don't know if any of that is connected to Ford, but Morris sure does represent a lot of people involved with drugs (-- I don't watch Breaking Bad, so I'll leave the references to the TV show's lawyer to those who know it better :p --)

The only connection to the city of Hamilton is... in the ITO the undercover cop was buying weed form Barbudan Dima, who apparently had to go to Hamilton to get it (starting from p. 381). Which in itself seems weird..., since the dry cleaner Bahrami was said to have "a personal marihuana production licence of 292 plants indoors" on Supertest Rd in Toronto (p.90).

here's another case that dennis morris was involved in...

Mob case to test new gang legislation

New legislation designed to help authorities crack down on organized crime will get its test in Toronto after the arrest of dozens of people in a police probe of an Eastern European criminal organization, experts agree.

A couple of sources have told me that despite police and locals downplaying this one of the charges could be related to Anthony Smith.

maybe that's why...

Rob Ford Says He Did Not Have a Hand in Killing Anthony Smith

he seems to have a thing for trying to get out ahead of stories these days.

plus... a quote from that vice article...

For many Torontonians and observers of this entangled, criminal-political craziness, it’s hard to believe Rob Ford when he denies any accusation—given his past history of refuting stories that are verifiably true.

Art Crime Gang One Step Ahead of Bungling Police

Lawyer Dennis Morris turned them over to police, citing solicitor-client privilege for keeping the identity of the suspects secret. The investigation, the public was told, was continuing. That was not the case. Much to the dismay of some officers involved in the AGO investigation, police brass — including former deputy chief Steve Reesor and with the knowledge of then Toronto police chief Julian Fantino — closed the file. But police who felt justice wasn't served started tailing the suspects, the Khatchaturov brothers, known to be clients of Morris. After it was robbed, Vincent and the older Khatchaturov were arrested.

So, what came of it was nothing, a suit was not and will not be filed. I shudder to think what would happen if our legal system was abused like this. Claiming $2 in damages for everyone in the city because of injury to the "Toronto brand"? Give me a break.

I don't think that Rob Ford as mayor would be as bad as is made out to be - and I say that as a non supporter of him. City Hall needs to be rebooted, and he's probably the best person to do that. Streetcars aren't going anywhere, cultural events such as Pride will continue, and there will not be service cuts for the TTC. Similarly, he hasn't even mentioned highway or arterial road expansion. Ford will likely focus most of his energy on combating unions - which frankly is a good thing, and on improving customer service and transparency at city hall - which is also a good thing. If a fixed link to the island airport is constructed, that would be the icing on the cake.

The single biggest mistake made by a modern day mayor of Toronto was the decision to NOT spend billions of dollars committed by upper levels of government toward on subways. A chance like that comes once a generation, meaning that it will likely take another generation of riding suburban streetcars to recover from the damage done.

I'm still not voting for Ford, but I'm just saying Ford as mayor wouldn't be the end of the world - and the long term effects will be nowhere near as bad as what the current administration caused in terms of lost opportunity.

Rob Ford is a cancer on our city...he must be removed

The investigation is now in a phase where the police know what happened, what crimes were committed and are now piecing together a case through interviews and evidence gathering.

Right now, investigators are probably sifting through Ford's cell and car location data cross referencing it with their theories of what happened and who he contacted and when and where. That could take a few months to complete.

Wrapping up the case, submitting it to the Crown and having them give a go ahead for a charge could take another couple of months.

I'd put a guess on mid to late summer unless a major breakthrough occurs that moves the investigation from methodical to a slam dunk case.

Whatever happens, Ford will be charged and released on bail and any trial would be held well after the election. Ford is still running unless he drops dead or kills someone himself.

To have a trial (let alone any appeals and ultimately sentencing) before the October election, they would have had to arrest him months if not years ago.

But you're saying charges before the election? Big, "this is a bad fucking man" charges before the election? A perp walk before the election? Bieber-style media shitshow at the cop shop complete with helicoptors, right?

Please, please, please let me get what I want. Lord knows it would be the first time.
