Rob Ford's Toronto

I may be a cockeyed optimist, but I'd like to think Fords 2010 win was a "perfect storm" of issues that propelled him into office.

I agree that his support does appear to rebounding from within his die hard base, but I'd like to think that without the moderate voters, he doesn't have a chance of reelection. Lacking another "perfect storm" I'm pretty sure he's done. He might have a comeback opportunity as a councillor in the future, a role for which, to be honest, he seems far more suited.

Just once, I'd like someone to actually call Ford on it when he propagates that story.

He only had one vote before, he only has one vote now...this "lost his powers" line is a bit rich. I didn't get to watch/listen to the meeting this morning so I don't know much about what happened except that Ford didn't offer any ideas or solutions, just got pissed off. He has never shown himself to be a man of leadership, ideas or innovation, which is what I want to see in a politician. Remember that private funding he claimed we'd get for the subway?

I tweeted Jennifer Pagliaro and she said "the investigation is on-going." So...yeah.
MM had said "The source allows for the possibility that they're waiting on a key piece of evidence. If that doesn't pan out, the source agrees that the optics are going to be terrible and the operation will have been a failure..."

Key piece of evidence. I wonder what that is. Maybe they're working on getting someone to talk to provide the police with that evidence? If so, that person doesn't necessarily have to be Lisi. Maybe Price?

Smitherman was a big factor. The people I know who voted for Ford said that there was no way they were going to vote for Smitherman and they felt that Ford could be contained by council.

This is unfortunately also my takeaway from the Star's article yesterday. They didn't say it in so many words, but to really to nail Ford, TPS really needed wiretaps on Lisi's phone (and therefore his conversations with Ford) on those crucial three days in May. Wiretaps on Lisi didn't begin until much much later. So, ergo, they have nothing and would have to rely on Lisi rolling over. Given the stakes involved, my bet is the Ford family would use both sticks and carrots to make sure this did not happen.

For that reason I am not optimistic.

Just hoping that it's still almost a year away from elections, still plenty of time for RF or DF to fuck up!!

Yeah - but the added pressure that can be brought on Lisi would be from the CRA in the form of a Tax Audit. I'm sure the TPS could report all sorts of cash transactions that went unreported in his returns... just sayin.

Also, this idea that the majority of Asian voters will automatically vote for someone like Chow simply because she's Chinese, is overly simplistic, not to mention slightly offensive.

Believe what you want - but I know very few Asians would choose a Ford over Chow. Most really do support their own.

As someone on Reddit just pointed out, could the fact that Lisi's bail was only 5 grand be an indication that he's cooperating with the investigation?

Whether it be Chow or Tory, or whomever, going against this simple man for mayor, there needs to be a point by point destruction of Ford's talking points. This is not being mean, just an honest and straightforward rebuttal. The fella is well past his best before date.

For a guy accused (or alleged) to have beaten/threatened people with a pipe for information - that is a low bail...

Not to mention false and unsubstantiated.

While Chow may be an easy sell to the first generation Canadians, the older crowd (their parents) who are much more traditional (socially falling very right of centre) are not cheering for Chow by virtue of her heritage.
My boss is Chinese and she said she, her husband and all her friends voted Ford, because they are all fiscal conservatives. They are not happy with him now due to his shenanigans, but they'll be looking for another fiscal conservative to vote for next election. Don't think that will be Chow.

I think the main think that people should take away from this is that while Ford may be inept and a hypocrite, he still has his enablers, namely his brother, the family fortune, the Federal PC Party, thugs, and the best lawyers money can buy. Never underestimate how much maneuvering goes on behind the facade of politics.

I doubt Ford will be charged due to his wealth, but I'm hoping that there'll be vital information that links him/Doug to corruption or organized crime.

I hope there'll be a proper, sensible and widely-publicized fiscal conservative platform from another candidate next term. It's all that's need to nuke Ford's support outside his hardcore followers.

Right now, council needs to avoid being tarred with the holier-than-thou brush that the Fords have constantly used in their political careers. It should start with Councillors reaching out to media sources for interviews and alternative headlines to 'Mayor Ford says Gravy Train Restarting', etc. This ain't the time to sit back and be complacent.

If they do nothing, the Fords will control the messaging for the remainder of the term and into the election. As stated so elegantly in the comments section of the Toronto Star:

Ford can sit back now and let the socialist bury themselves with higher taxes. He may well be able to say "Told you so" next year with perfect justification.

Ford claimed the bureaucracy has changed since the mayor’s powers were reduced by council this month.

“It’s so disappointing that in five days, as soon as they reduced my powers, all they’re doing is going back to the old tax-and-spend ways, getting back on the gravy train and spending and spending and spending and spending,” Ford said.

“It’s embarrassing that people of this city have to pay over 2.5 per cent in property taxes when we had it locked in at one and three-quarters. That is absolutely atrocious. And I will not be supporting this budget, I can guarantee it.”

Yep. He went ahead and said it. What a surprise.
