Rob Ford's Toronto

He was talking about a CFL stadium yesterday - not the NFL

That may be as of yesterday, however, the Fords have expressed interest in Toronto hosting it's own NFL team; other monies for a stadium could be attracted for this possibility.

The skydome eventually will have real grass put in and that will eliminate the Argos from using the facility. Either way they will need a new stadium. I hope a mirrored version of the TFC stadium could be built beside it. If a NFL stadium is going to be built it will be in combination with an Olympic bid.

How is it, the same guy who wanted to close down the High Park Kiddy Zoo (because we can't afford it) now wants to build a multi-million dollar stadium for football? We can't even build a decent transit network and Ford wants to waste money on something we already have, a stadium for the Argos. It boggles the mind. And over 50% of people in the Sun Poll, agree with Ford. I thought Ford Nation was about saving money by not building anything? Now all of a sudden, because Ford wants a new stadium, they want to spend millions of dollars on sports, when we desperately need new transit? It's like "Ford Nation" is some brainwashed cult that can't think for themselves. WTF is wrong with people?

Rob Ford wants his pony. Even if all the kids wouldn't get your rocking horse, at least he gets his real pony, and that will make him happy.

I thought for sure when Toronto elected Ford that we would be going in on the 2020 Olympics even if it didn't make any sense with his Gravy Train mantra. I always thought hed justify it someway to get the games as a way to build his NFL stadium. Big time wrong on that prediction. But really are we that much better off today that we could bid for the 2020 Olympics. Not based on the transit progress that's been happening lately.

Comments on TO Sun article made me laugh:

Is Ford on crack? When he went to Calgary, he said Toronto should build a fountain wading pool. When he went to Vegas he came back wanting to build a casino.

How about we deal with fixing the Gardiner and building a relief subway line. Then, we can deal with a football stadium.

Hope he doesn't visit NYC, Paris or Beijing and come back demanding that "the people of Toronto have spoken folks...they've told me repeatedly...they want a [Statue of Liberty/Eiffel Tower/Great Wall of China/insert blank]"

This is so true lol

But if he visited Paris, Berlin, Los Angeles, London, and other cities with light rail, why is he so against that? Maybe his staff or Doug didn't write the speech for him.

Refer to my earlier response. The answer is -- as usual -- he's an idiot.

That's how Ford's brain works. Squirrel!

On a related matter (his visit to Winnipeg last weekend), he was impressed with how they can run their city with just 16 Councillors. He's really opening up a can of worms there, and he's too dumb to even know it. http://meslin.wordpress.com/2013/07/24/16-new-seats/

Ford Nation isn't one big homogeneous Pro-Ford group. Some of them support Ford no matter what but others support Ford because of his "save the taxpayers' money" mantra. That latter part is going crazy after the property tax increase for a Scarborough subway and ticked off again with this stadium proposal. I know a few of these people -- some of them are even on this site I believe -- and they're loudly against wasting taxpayer money. Denzil Minan-Wong is a part of this group. They won't vote for another white elephant seen as Rob's own personal toy and it's clear to most that this is something he's championing for himself. He's never been shy about his love for football, sometimes to the detriment of the taxpayer (i.e. playing hookie, using city resources for his hobby, hiring football staff to city jobs) so many will rightfully see this as the gravy train Ford ran so successfully against in 2010.

How many CFL fans is he going to sway to vote for him with this stadium promise? I think it's a severe net loss when put up against the respect for taxpayers loss. Yet, I think we all know that Ford is pigheaded enough to let a football stadium bring him down by sticking to it in an election. This stadium talk needs to be brought up often during the election and watch Ford squirm defending it and how people call him all the time and tell him they want a football stadium, a football stadium, a football stadium! Meanwhile, few people watching are going to identify themselves as those "people".

Wait imagine a scenario where a new stadium is built but outside of the 416 ... that would probably be a pretty big negative on Ford's part from external observers point of view ?

When it comes to "tacky tacky tacky", I also can't help thinking back to this under-the-radar detail in a past Ford show Torontoist recap

http://torontoist.com/2013/06/the-rob-ford-radio-recap-doug-comes-alive/

2:53: Sergei calls in, and he says he has a more sophisticated program for the water fountain in front of City Hall, but City Hall didn’t respond to his unsolicited proposal. Doug Ford then suggests that Toronto should have a mini-Bellagio fountain. “Go big or go home,†he says, channeling his inner Donald Trump.
