Pride Week, MP under fire after Tory outcry

Predicted spin on this: The federal government shouldn't be spending our tax dollars on cultural events anyway!

Reality: The Conservative government will spend lots of money on cultural festivals and events this year. Just not gay ones. Don't be disingenuous - the subtext is clear.

Also: Stupid question maybe, but does Alberta have a pride event? Is it cowboy themed? Is it getting any federal funding this year?

Pride Toronto was removed this morning from the government’s Marquee Tourism Program website even though it received funding, yet other 2009 festivals that have passed haven’t been removed.

maybe they thought that if they left it there, it would make all the other events gay. isn't the gay contagious?

p.s, there's a very good chance that some special interest group (and i mean special as in the short school bus) whose name contains either the words family or life in its name took offense on behalf of the magic sky man of that event being listed there.

Both Edmonton and Calgary have their Pride Weeks, but they're generally low key and don't attract many people from out of town - tourism is a key component of receiving funding from the MTEP.

The Calgary Stampede can be argued to be as sexually charged as Pride - over-the-top open bar corporate parties getting people drunk and scantily clad cowgirls is never a family-friendly combination. Not to mention the dead horses and calves.

though such a combination could be helpful if you want to make a family.

And never mind the scantily clad cowgirls: consider the cowboys--the Brokebackness of it all effectively renders Pride redundant in Calgary. Perhaps.
