President Joe Biden's United States of America

Probably the less popular opinion is that we shouldn't be trying to block Alberta oil exports. I think Canada's accountability is for the CO2 we emit through our own consumption, and that is used to produce oil from oilsands. We shouldn't be trying to curb foreign emissions by constraining exports from Alberta. This won't work anyway, and just makes us poorer and stokes resentment in Alberta. Norway has this figured out.
I’d guess that a large part of each Canadian‘s CO2 emissions are produced not in Canada, but offshore in Asian factories, mines, refineries and coal plants making the goods we buy. We must put in place a carbon tariff to eliminate the economic advantages of moving carbon emissions and jobs offshore.

I'm a little confused by how in one post you suggest its a sunset industry and in another we should get out of the way of exports from it............

Those two things seem to be in contradiction.

Both statements are saying government should get out of the way: we should exploit the resource responsibly while it is still econ.omic to do so, and the government should not be investing public funds on uneconomic schemes such as west-east pipeline, building unneeded refineries, etc. Both are saying we should maximize the social benefit to Alberta/Canada (a complex balance) of the resource endowment.

Unilaterally killing our own resource extraction industry for climate change reasons is sheer stupidity. We will accomplish nothing but making ourselves poorer.

Until 2024, when the GOP regains power and tosses the agreement once more.
If the Biden administration isn’t bold in addressing the many problems the average American faces with meaningful solutions, this is a very strong possibility.

Greenwald kind of makes a good point here. As despicable as what happened yesterday was, I think it’s good to take a critical look at what the government response will be. We all remember the post-9/11 Patriot Act.

Love this quote from that Twitter thread:

Incoming President Biden's Stimulus Package proposal has been unveiled.

1.9 Trillion

Includes:

- 1 time cheque of $1,400 U.S. to every household
- Topped up unemployment benefits
- 14 Days of Paid sick leave, through the end of September only (so not a permanent employment standards change), with reimbursement of cost for States and Employer of 500 or fewer staff.
- A Bill raising the U.S. minimum wage to $15 USD (approx. $20 CAD) over a period of time (not clear on the timeline, but almost certainly phased over a few years)
- Large investments in infrastructure

Hasn't even taken office yet and he's already doing more than Trump ever did.

Mind you, he still has to get that through Congress.

Which in a Senate controlled 51-50 may yet prove contentious.

But yes, good start.
