Nuit Blanche

The funny thing is, the underfunded arts community is being roped into the Mayor's campaign to raise taxes - while being given no indication that any of the money raised will be spent on the arts.

In descending financial order, based on a home with an assessed value of $369,300, our property taxes go on:

* Educational taxes ( $974.95 )
* Police Service and Board ( $531.52 )
* Debt Charges ( $265.99 )
* Fire Service ( $226.93 )
* Social Services
* Shelter, Support, housing Administration
* TTC ( inc. Wheel Trans )
* Parks, Forestry, Recreation
* Transportation Services
* Solid Waste Management
* Toronto Public Library
* Children's Services
* Emergency Medical Services
* Toronto Public Health
* Community Partnership and Investment program
* Homes for adma ( ooops! Homes for the aged )
* Economic Development, Culture & Tourism ( $16.61 )
* City Council
* City Planning
* Municipal Licensing & Standards
* Building Services
* Other

Perhaps there's a department at City Hall scheduling the Mayor to be conveniently out of town - as he was when the ROM opened - when significant cultural events that the City hasn't contributed to financially take place.

a little TTC anyone?

Speaking of TTC and Nuit Blanche...

Media Advisory: Additional TTC Service for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Sept. 25, 2007) - The TTC will operate a special shuttle bus service as well as overnight subway service in the central core area during the popular Scotiabank Nuit Blanche cultural event that takes place from the evening of Saturday, September 29th to the morning of Sunday, September 30th.

The TTC Nuit Blanche shuttle bus service will link more than a dozen downtown venues. Buses will run every 15 minutes, and regular TTC fares will apply. Shuttle service will run from 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 29th to 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 30th.

In addition to the special shuttle bus service, the core of the TTC's subway system will also operate all night. Instead of subway service ending at approximately 2:00 a.m., trains will continue to operate until approximately 7:00 a.m. on Sunday morning on the Yonge-University Subway between Eglinton Station and St. George Station, and on the Bloor-Danforth Subway between Christie Station and Broadview Station. Both lines will see trains arrive approximately every 12 minutes. Sunday subway service resumes at 9 a.m., as usual.

This marks the first time the TTC has kept subway service running during the overnight period.

Additional service will also be added to downtown overnight bus and streetcar routes serving Scotiabank Nuit Blanche sites.

To round out the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche experience, purchase a TTC Day Pass. For $8.50, a group of up to six people, (maximum 2 adults over the age of 19) can enjoy unlimited travel on the TTC from the beginning of service on Saturday, September 29th at 5:30 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 30th.

From sunset on Saturday, September 29 to sunrise on Sunday, September 30, 2007, the public will rediscover Toronto through Scotiabank Nuit Blanche, a free signature event produced by the City of Toronto. Featured will be 195 contemporary art projects created by more than 500 artists in three distinct exhibition zones throughout the city. For more information the public can visit www.scotiabanknuitblanche.ca or call Access Toronto at 416-338-0338.

Sort of silly that the subway will be closed for two hours between 07:00 and 09:00.

sure i'm down for that. it'd be great to meet some UT members.

it says to come at least 15min early so meet up somewhere near the base?

Speaking of the TTC, there will be an exhibit at Lower Bay:

"Lower Bay Station, Toronto's ghost station, is used as a vessel to contain sounds that are within and below the threshold of human hearing - infrasound and tactile sound - where sound is felt rather than heard. Low frequencies created by cars and subways are contributors to the cacophony of infrasonic noise that exists deep below the rumbling of the city. These tactile sounds have also been associated with paranormal activity and ghost sightings."

that is going to be one of my stops for sure. although i'll probably do it later on at night to have the full effect of the "paranormal activity and ghost sighting" experience. plus i'm hoping it won't be as busy at that time of night.

Toronto is the only city in the world with a transit system?

Toronto is unique in that transit doesn't have a secure source of funding from an upper level of government. It once had that funding from the Province until the Harrisites announced an exciting new approach to transit funding which gave the City the ability to spend transit dollars any way it wanted to and by the way, the approx. 75% provincial subsidy will be slashed to zero.

That is why nearly half of the City's budget goes to transit.

Toronto is the only city in the world with a transit system?

No, but it's difficult to compare situations across the board like that. One could ask if Toronto is the only city with financial problems...something we all know the answer to.

As for the event, I couldn't make it out last year so I'm really looking forward to it!
