The older building here was unremarkable, and the newer not offensive.......yet still, contextually, I would prefer a restored version of the original, maybe w/added height in the centre.

Looking south on Bay Street from about a block north of Queen: (no date given) (I'm bad at dating cars from this era, but based on buildings standing, this can't be later than 1967)

As per some excellent sleuthing by @DirectionNorth we now the photo dates from 1963

Or earlier. It's always a bit of a Mugg's Game since people keep cars for several years. That Dodge is a '62 and the Pontiac is '59.

Excellent contribution (as always); that narrows us to 5 years, 1962-1967.

Also, the Simpson Tower was completed in 1968 and it does not appear in the archival photo. Notwithstanding its setback, it left only three windows exposed in the Bay/Richmond building, and it the photo there are four windows:

Would the "before" be around 1988/89 or so? That looks like one of those hipster-baiting Black Label wall ads...
that looks like a 3rd Gen Honda Accord (1986 - 1989) so probably around 1988/89 if it's indeed in the 80s

I found the image on the Toronto Archives site: the photograph was taken by 1963. Image link

Edit: apparently the website has a session timeout. I did not know that. The images can be found, under the Eric Trussler fonds. Series 648, file 129. (I hope this link works)

What an absolute shame, I still can't get over the loss of the Temple Building. The other building on the SW corner was quite attractive too, lost for a dinky 1 storey banking pavillion. And of course the atrocities committed to that intersection persist to this day with the horrid re-clad of the old Simpsons Building.
