Re the Garden Court "hipped mansards": a particularly monumental version of that gesture is at the old Bank of Canada in Ottawa

Fans of pre-war apartments should check out the lovely cluster on Lonsdale, east of Spadina in Forest Hill Village.

ganj, it will no doubt please you to know that every one of those was added to the Inventory of Heritage Properties this year. I believe it was done as there was some development pressure, and when I was last up there in the summer months, something was happening to two of them on the south side. The two that were being "re-worked", however, were not the nicest of them anyways.
