Luxe retailer steps it up with a `pop-up' shop

Toronto's temple of uptown fashion is heading downtown to the nightclub district.

Luxury retailer Holt Renfrew is opening its first "pop-up" shop in Toronto's King W. and Portland Sts. area, a strip that is home to hip watering holes, scenester bars, Jrestaurants and clubs such as Cheval, The Spoke Club and Buca.

The temporary store, to be located at Fashion House, the upscale condo showroom at 560 King St. W., will be open Dec. 2 to Dec. 6.

The pop-up store – also known as a guerrilla store, where an established shop or designer takes up temporary residence for a few days of business – is a concept that has become popular since pioneered by Comme des Garçons a few years ago in various European capitals.

Often there is no store signage and the short-term shop relies on word-of-mouth advertising.

Usually a strategy used by small designers and retailers, mega-stores and brands are now getting in on the action. In New York City, Gap and the über-cool Parisian store Colette teamed up to open a temporary store location. And recently, Gucci opened a small store to peddle its Mark Ronson-designed sneakers.

The Holt Renfrew pop-up is not just an excuse to push Christmas merchandise. The store is taking a more highbrow approach, peddling not tins of Christmas cookies but androgyny. Breaking down the gender divide in retailing, the mini-store stocks merchandise will not be sex-specific.

Damn.. I was hoping they're actually opening a store there.

A pop-up shop could lead to an actual store if sales are strong. A lot of Holt Renfrew customers shop in the King West\West Queen West area.

My roommate works for Holts (well when she's in Canada as we're both in Spain right now). She just told me when the CFO did his annual store conference in Ottawa he said that after the Calgary store Holts will not be expanding for the foreseeable future.

Apparently they're bleeding red.

Since no-one else took the cue, how is Spain?

King West retail opinions

So there's a 1,000 sq.ft. space available on King street in the TIFF building, towards the West-end. Any ideas of what might work there? Keep in mind, no food is allowed at that spot. The Store-frontage is about 30 feet which is quite good for exposure.
