Israel will be 'wiped off map,' Iranian leader says

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran's hardline president called for Israel to be "wiped off the map" and said a new wave of Palestinian attacks would destroy the Jewish state, the state-run news media reported Wednesday.

In a swipe at some Arab states, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also denounced attempts to recognize Israel or normalize relations with it.

"There is no doubt that the new wave (of attacks) in Palestine will wipe off this stigma (Israel) from the face of the Islamic world," Ahmadinejad told students Wednesday during a Tehran conference called The World without Zionism.

"Anybody who recognizes Israel will burn in the fire of the Islamic nation's fury (while) any (Islamic leader) who recognizes the Zionist regime means he is acknowledging the surrender and defeat of the Islamic world," Ahmadinejad said.

Ahmadinejad also reissued the call by the founder of Iran's Islamic revolution, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, for the destruction of Israel.

"As the imam said, Israel must be wiped off the map," said Ahmadinejad, who came to power in August and replaced Mohammad Khatami, a reformist who advocated international dialogue and tried to improve Iran's relations with the West.

Ahmadinejad referred to Israel's recent withdrawal from the Gaza Strip as a "trick," saying Gaza was already a part of Palestinian lands and the pullout was designed to win acknowledgement of Israel by Islamic states.

"The fighting in Palestine is a war between the (whole) Islamic nation and the world of arrogance," Ahmadinejad said, using Tehran's propaganda epithet for the United States and Israel. ``Today, Palestinians are representing the Islamic nation against arrogance."

Iran does not recognize the existence of Israel and has often called for its destruction.

Harsh words for Israel are common in Iran, especially at this time of year, the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

In Washington, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said the remarks reconfirm "what we have been saying about the regime in Iran."

"It underscores the concerns we have about Iran's nuclear intentions," McClellan said.

This Friday — the last Muslim day of prayer in the Ramandan holiday — has been declared Quds Day, or Jerusalem Day, in Iran. Rallies were slated in support of Palestinians — and against Israel's occupation of parts of the city and other Palestinian lands.

Other Iranian politicians also have issued anti-Israeli statements in attempts to whip up support for Friday's countrywide demonstrations.

But Ahmedinejad's strident anti-Israeli statements on the eve of the demonstration were harsher than those issued during the term of the reformist Khatami and harkened back to the fiery speeches of Khomeini.

Ahmadinejad was a longtime member of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, which even operates a division dubbed the Quds Division, a rhetorical reference to Tehran's hopes of one day ending Israel's domination of Islam's third-holiest city.

After his election in August, Ahmadinejad received the support of the powerful hardline Revolutionary Guards, who report directly to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Last year, a senior member of the guards attended a meeting that called for and accepted applications for suicide bombers to target U.S. troops and Israelis.

Israel has been at the forefront of countries calling and end to Iran's nuclear program, which the United States and many others in the West say is aimed at acquiring weapons of mass destruction. Iran says the program is for generating electricity.

Iran announced earlier this year that it had fully developed solid fuel technology for missiles, a major breakthrough that increases their accuracy.

The Shahab-3, with a range of 1,300 kilometres to more than 1,930 kilometres, is capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to Israel and U.S. forces in the Middle East.

This makes the war in Iraq seem even dumber. There is a lot more evidence that Iran is developing weapons and they are openly talking about wiping a country off the map. This is a pretty harsh threat... almost a declaration of war.

This is what happens when uneducated people vote in an uneducated moron of a leader.

Its kind of chicken or the egg debate. Is it the fault of eneducated people not taking action and learning more about politics and taking a stand to realize that their leader is a murderer and thug? Or is it the fault of a regime that has spent 40 years brainwashing people with an intricate system of propoghanda and cuts to destroy the democratic will of people to blind them from the truth? Its probably a mix of both but sadly, even when Bush is gone, there wont be much change and the empire will still continue to wage its illegal wars.

(actually from Jon Stewart's America)

this can have two outcomes..

1) he can be left in power to cause instability and fear in the region which can be profatable for the military machine. (hint -north korea)

2) he will cause the next war but it might not happen untill after the next election or terrorist mission which won't happen on bush's term because there's no way that bush will let it happen on his watch for reasons obvious.

personally, i think this guy is flapping his mouth because he thinks he can. the states have some major cleanup at home and are fighting an unpopular war and still in afganistan. the U.S is really busy and has its resources stretched thin. they can't even care for their own people because of war. if the states get involved in anything else in this term, the people are gonna be major pissed. this iranian guy knows this and is exploiting it.

the simple solution would be to takeout the dude but the states won't do that because it's not profatable.

if isreal gets threatened and decides to fight back, get ready for a bumpy ride. the whole region will get in a panic mode and cause an all out horror filck.

Why should this be the responsibility of the USA? If they're going to threaten Israel (or any nation) with annihilation or nuclear bombs it's the international community's responsibility to step in. Not just the US.

This is a pretty good indication that the Iranians don't have nukes. If they did, they wouldn't be saying things like that, because it encourages pre-emptive nuclear strikes. You'd probably see the Russians clobber Iran, instead of the US or Israel.

Agreed. In the case of Iraq, I think the international community did take reasonable steps to continue to monitor Iraq and their nuclear program, and has become apparent, was succeeding in this regard. Now in terms of Saddam that is a somewhat different story and does leave room for improvment.

I would not be surprised to see the US go into Iraq (or Syria for that matter). Yes their troops are stretched thin, however, there is always the ability to institute a draft, and lets be honest, the current administration really does not care what happens to its citizens. Yes New Orleans was in large part a bigger disaster because there was not enough National Guardsmen to respond immediatly, but does the Bush regime care about this? No.

I think unless the International community can step up and make attempts to resolve this conflict in a multilateral and much more peaceful than the US, than war expanding within this region is inevitable.

good point. if they did have nukes, they'd just use them without saying anything to have the advantage of suprise.

--edit--

they could act that way because they know that the U.S might think the way as stated above.

like i said, he feels that he is protected by circumstance to say what he wants.

because the only way the war machine makes money is through war and the rebuilding contracts that follow.

because the only way the war machine makes money is through war and the rebuilding contracts that follow.

And lets not forget the contracts that go to Boeing and other aerospace comapnies, the contracts that go to privatized security forces, the money they can take from such red herrings as health care, food stamps, and other social programs and use it to subsidize a costly war and also meet their broader agenda of stripping the last bits of a social safety. There is oil, which is the primary interest in the Middle East. There is the money that those investing in all these companies make as the war wages on. There is the resulting shirnking American economy which gives them further justification to subsidize corporations in their 'trickle down' economic plans.

I dont think there is anyway for the US to sustain the war machine though. They need war on a large scale (hence, the agressive stance towards Iran and Syria) and if they cant achieve that, it will ultimately collapse. The problem is as war overseas becomes larger and more encompassing, the American society, which will further decline (except for the top 1%), will see a rise in dissent and eventually everything breaks down. They have no communist or narco trafficers or facist European leaders to blame. They have terrorists. But in a world where information from all across the globe is accessable to many, its harder and harder to pull off the propoghanda campaigns to make the American people believe what they are doing is right. What makes the Terrorist scare different than the Red scare of the 50's is that people can also see that what defines Osama and Al Qaeda as terrorists, also defines Bush and the United States as one.

:rollin @ Iran thinking they can threaten Israel. Even if they did have nukes, they have no means of carrying them - what are they gonna do? Put it on a camel and hope it gets to Israel? In case of a nuclear strike from Iran, Israel could pretty much eradicate the country before they are even hit.

^ Supposedly they recently developed solid rocket fuel. Not sure about all the other important components.

Iran bought missiles from North Korea that can hit all of the Middle East and parts of Europe.
