GO Transit: Service thread (including extensions)

I was just looking at the future Lakeshore West GO Schedule post the June 27 service increases, and it includes "West Harbour GO", as the first stop. Though there is no service.

And, wow, Oakville will have 9 departures to Union over the 63 minutes from 6:55am to 7:58am.

Ah if you go forward to July 20, you can see it in use for the Pan AM Games.

There will be a no-stop express from Union all the way there. 70 minutes trip time, departing at 5:50pm.

Lovely. I'll begin using that for my Hamilton work commute!

Might have to get a SoBi bikeshare membership (for lock-and-forget bicycle convenience) as I'd have to lock up my bike at Hunter, then unlock a bike at West Harbour (JamesNorth), and I don't want to take my own personal bike all the way to Union.

Too bad this is an event-only train, but this is a speedy option.

Beyond the Pan Ams it looks like two trains a day will go in and out. Both are existing trip that presently originate/terminate at Aldershot. Some later and earlier trips will have a bus connection via the Hamilton GO Centre. They appear to travel there on demand only. There will be no bus pickups from West Harbour at any time on any day for now.

The PDF version of the schedule shows departures from Union to West Harbour (express to Clarkson) departing at 16:47 and 17:23, starting on July 13. http://www.gotransit.com/timetables/en/PDF/Timetables/06150915/Table1.pdf - taking 72 minutes.

I think the 5:50 pm non-stop express you see to West Harbour on July 20th (there's also 1:58 and 2:28 pm departures that stop everywhere that day as well that take 82 minutes) are the soccer specials for the Pan-Am games, on the schedule that Go Transit released 2-3 weeks ago.

There's return trains from West Harbour the same day at 8:30 pm, 9 pm, 11:30 pm, and midnight making all stops to Union in 84 minutes. The final 2 trains run through to Oshawa (arriving 1:54 AM and 2:24 AM).

July 20th is the typical weekday schedule when there are soccer games. The weekend schedules varies with different game times on different days.

I sleuthed the timetables.
I need to create an uncluttered grid chart in Excel soon, that is specific to Hamilton trains.
"West Harbor GO" is the new official name of the James North GO station that is being built.

Niagara GO Service does not stop at West Harbor. It really, really should. But the track is a deadend in one direction at West Harbor GO at the moment, they will need to fix that ($150M Stoney Creek GO station will fix that; confirmed).

You don't have to. There are four trains leaving Union Station this evening for Hamilton.
There's no nonstop GO train that departs Union and goes nonstop to Hamilton.
A train version of Hamilton 16 Express.

This is the first time this is happening, as far as I know.

I thought CN used to run some of the trains non-stop to Hamilton. Ah yes, in 1950 CN train 17 used to take 55 minutes to get to Hamilton .. though it did stop once at Sunnyside station.

70 minutes does seem rather slow given that the regular GO service is 72 minutes with 7 stops! I'm wondering if there is some stops missing in the on-line timetable for that run.

Oh right. I was referring specifically to GO running an express --

Good observation. I wonder if they're being conservative with the nonstop, and that it will actually arrive ahead of schedule.

What's the problem with Niagara trains serving West Harbour? Are the station/platform tracks terminal rather than run-through or something?

EDIT: having poked around, that is exactly the problem. Still a bit bonkers that they couldn't have a face on the northern platform to one side of the mainline but the presentation I saw didn't have detailed drawings so I guess there is a showstopper.
