GO Transit: Construction Projects (Metrolinx, various)

Spotted these "cubes" on Lakeshore East between Danforth and Union today - are these foundations for the OCS infrastructure and are they a recent installation? Thanks

Yes, and yes. I don't know of anywhere that they are being retrofitted, but plenty of the ML recent construction includes a lot of them.

Update on the Lakeshore East corridor.

Queen Bridge. Girders have been installed in the the gap between the new & old section of the bridge.

^^ Nice pics. How old are the shots? I'm surprised at how little snow there seems to be on the corridor despite the recent major snowfalls.

Thanks! They were taken on Sunday. There aren't many tall buildings next to the corridor, so when the sun is out, it gets a lot of exposure. Plus the rain and above 0 days have helped with melting pretty much all of it here.

It's interesting also just how much the movement of trains does blow the snow off the tracks. It sure looked like deep snow back when we had the blizzard(s), but the main lines that see frequent or long trains cleared back to bare track quite quickly.

I was on the train, in the last week, through that section. At the time, snow was fully accumulated in multiple sections, essentially anywhere they weren't currently working.

Where they were actively working, the snow was largely gone.

I would suggest (but don't know) that this indicates the snow was manually removed where it was in the way.

This may well have happened in that location.... but if you check any of the busier rail main lines, you will see the snow is gone from all of them, for their entire length.

The new railcam in Ingersoll is a good reference point. The short line in Ingersoll had their snow plow out a couple times this winter, but the busier CN line cleared itself. The tracks clear themselves much faster than the surrounding fields.

You can see for yourself when the next snow event happens.

The list of upcoming construction weekend closures was updated. I was expecting LSE corridor closures to get the third track operational by the end of summer, but nothing is on the most recent list after April.

There are several Barrie closures and one for Stouffville, which hopefully is for track alignment or Highland Creek bridgeworks.

^I am confident that there will be a track shift on LSE to get the two tracks on their new alignment, but as I have been looking at @kotsy 's great aerial photos, I have been wondering if the restoration of the third track will have to wait for some further roadbed and bridge construction. Basically, a repeat of what has been done to construct the two new tracks on the south side?

Looks like March 30th is the date that the east end turnouts at West Harbour may finally be cut in.

I was hoping the four existing bridges would be replaced this summer following the LSE track shift that “should” occur by the end of April. It felt as if the two bridge extensions took about six months last year before the two tracks were realigned in November.

Perhaps getting the four bridges fully replaced, a third track and the return of LSE express running by this fall is too optimistic. The return of LSE express would “only” be one year late.

LSE express doesn't need to wait. There's already enough triple track between Danforth and Guildwood for an express to overtake a local. And a two-track railway can support far more than the 8 trains per hour we're currently running during peak periods.
