Finch West Line 6 LRT

This is consistent with how they usually announce things. This would make the total $ price and opening date out-of-reach of anyone until after the election, as you'd not be able to FOIA the information in time.

It should be reached prior to the election.
It would have to be reached before the writ drops, I'd think ... in early May.

They'll have an agreement in principle on costs and schedules already at this point.

doubtful. The 36 Finch West bus is currently scheduled to take 42 minutes to go from Highway 27 to Keele. The LRT should cover that in under 30. Transferring won't introduce a 12 minute time penalty.

Also, holy crap that bus is slow. that is a 19 minute drive on the same stretch!

Is this not the case for all transit? There's always going to be a transfer for someone.

Well old TTC plans for bus route changes due to this line stated that the 39 finch East and 199 finch Rocket would be extended to Finch West Station which would sort of alleviate this situation. It would be better than Sheppard bc u would only need one transfer to get across Finch.

It's not a "Now that the Finch West LRT is a done deal, it's time to look ahead to the next phase: the extension east to Yonge." I inquired during Finch West LRT EA,... a Finch West LRT from Keele to Yonge will be considered after all the other LRT projects in Toronto are done,... so it'll be quite awhile.

And once they get around to considering it (in 10, 15, 20 years?),... one of the main factor will be capacity available on Yonge Subway Line 1. Impact of Eglinton Crosstown LRT and MidTown intensification, intensification in North York Centre, where we're at with Downtown Relief Line extension north? Yonge subway line 1 extension north to RichmondHill?

Well, if the PCs get in... people might think that might just happen.

Doubtful, Sheppard west makes too much sense for them. They'd build Sheppard East or pull something even stupider like turning Finch West into a subway.

Speaking of Sheppard West: there are more benefits building that extension then extending Finch east to Finch Station. These include:
1. Subway connection to wilson yard (excellent for operations)
2. Will provide seamless transferability between the Spadina, Yonge, and Don Mills subway lines
3. Will be shorter in length than a finch east extension, and therefore, will be faster than the bus currently is despite 2 transfers. (2-3 stations on sheppard vs ~8 on Finch)
4. Give Yonge riders an efficient option of taking the Spadina line
5. Doesn't really have to be a deep bore tunnel since the areas aren't dense

Yet people don't believe me when I say the Finch West bus is the worst route in the city (okay, Dufferin might be worse)

It's slow cause 5-10 people get off and then another 5-10 get on at almost every stop. It's slow and unreliable cause the service is overused. With less stops (but enough to keep the local access) and all door boarding, all this dwell time will be cut! The TTC got to operate this like a subway (not a streetcar) and once the doors a closing, they shouldn't let any late comers on to the train.

Making a super long local bus route makes things worst. I think the TTC is starting to understand this and wouldn't replace the 36B (Finch Stn to Finch West Stn) with an extension of the 39. The 199B itself does the job.
 
^^^Great news. However, can someone please explain this quote that is part of the announcement?

"IO and Metrolinx expect to reach financial close and award the contract in spring 2018, with design and construction to begin shortly thereafter."

Why not have this announced at the same time as today's news release?

This is normal. Financial close is usually reached a month or so after award. Usually to address any cost related issues that may have arisen between RFP submission (Dec 2017) and award (now), as well as finalizing all the formal paperwork as others have mentioned.

It happens for all of these Infrastructure Ontario alternate procurement projects.
 
An extension from Keele to Yonge, or even further along Finch East, is desirable.

There is a variety of travel patterns; some of them aren't inconsistent with a mode change at Keele. For example, Etobicoke to the subway (Spadina branch), or Finch East via #199 to the subway to York U.

And yet, the transfer at Keele is somewhat artificial when the majority of E-W routes run to Yonge, and does affect a number of travel patterns.
