Finch West Line 6 LRT

If they are still intent on using the original yard location than I don't see the point in ending the line just at UTSC when the trackage north to Sheppard would already be built; so why not just terminate the line at Morningside-Sheppard like the original Scarborough-Malvern LRT? If they aren't going to do that then the city has a good amount of land on the south side of the 401 they can use to build a storage facility for the Crosstown without having to cross the 401. It doesn't have the be a maintenance facility like Mount Dennis, just a storage yard for LRV's.

Something like this yard in Calgary. Nothing more than some storage tracks and a shed. It's relatively inexpensive when compared to a major facility like Mount Dennis, but still serves as a way to get trains at each end of the line quickly. Major maintenance work would obviously still take place at Mount Dennis.

The biggest question is why would one think there's enough like-minded minds in Ontario to elect him.

Good to see you've evolved past the "bigot" epithet. Many in the US were blindsided when Trump won. I think it's very likely the same will occur with Ontario, even though Ford is nowhere near as bombastic as Trump.

Wasn't the purpose of ATC installation to increase train headways in the system, thereby increasing the capacity of the subway by 20%? The TTC says that headways of 1 minute, 55 seconds can be achieved with with ATC.

If this is the case, doesn't the TTC need more trains than the 11 you are suggesting to run at these frequencies?

So do the math.

11 trains over 6.9km at 2:21. That's a train almost every 600m.

If you bring the headway down to 1:55, you need to have a train less than every 500m (~488m). Multiply by the length of the extension, means that you need 14 trains to service it (since you can't have a partial train).

(Yes, this is a bit of a simplistic look at how they calculate it, but it's also going to get you a pretty good ballpark figure.)

The biggest question is why would one think there's enough like-minded minds in Ontario to elect him. The high PC poll numbers reflect Patrick Brown and the belief that Christine Elliott (or perhaps everyone figures there candidate) would win. Once the polls stabilize to reflect Drug Ford's leadership, there's no chance in hell he'll be Premier.
The die-hard fans of either the Liberal or PC party will vote for him, but for very different reasons. The only way to bring fresh blood to the Liberal party is if majority of the incumbents lose their seats. It's too bad the choice to make for that to happen in this election is a very bitter pill.

Exactly, and that doesn't particularly help the rest of the Yonge line, meaning that extending it north serves no purpose as yard relief (which was the original argument in question).

So you would rather that they run those 14 trains up from Wilson then?

The original EA for the Scarborough-Malvern LRT had storage tracks on Military Trail. Though, I don’t think UTSC would want their main campus through-road to become a wall of LRT vehicles at night or midday.

There it is...

^^^Great news. However, can someone please explain this quote that is part of the announcement?

"IO and Metrolinx expect to reach financial close and award the contract in spring 2018, with design and construction to begin shortly thereafter."

Why not have this announced at the same time as today's news release?

Kindly educate me please!

Thanks

Simply put, the more announcements the better. Especially now that its election season. Financial close may not be reached prior to the election.

There may still be some contract details that need to be worked out before it can be formally signed. This is basically the equivalent of an agreement-in-principle.

Either way, I just hope there's a signature on the dotted line before June.

It should be reached prior to the election.

This is what always happens when they make these announcements, financial close happens a month or two later, and construction begins essentially immediately. once they have announced the winning proponent (today), they finalize construction schedules and financial terms while the proponent prepares to mobilize it's crews.
