Re: Historic photos

Underground public washrooms at Queen and Parliament with an exhaust pipe (?) sticking out from a little pagoda. I wonder how many of those there were around town? Presumably City run.

And is that a vending machine on the side of the building in that earlier photo? I wonder what it sold?

And there was no pond of water in front of the war memorial at Queen and University. I wonder when that was added?

To think that the first Mock Goth Trinity College survived for over a century, until the mid-1950's, before being demolished -all that remains is the stone gate at Trinity-Bellwoods Park which I think dates from the early 1900's.

Just surmising, but could it have been part of the University Subway-era median overhaul?

Re: Historic photos

The "1932?" aerial view shows a nice bit of open land in the heart of downtown that no longer exists.

St.James Square housed the 1850's Normal School, where teachers were trained and the forerunner of the ROM began. Early Toronto society went to the park to promenade.

It was torn down in the early 1960's for Ryerson. All that remains is the forlorn facade in the quadrangle north of Gould.

Re: Historic photos

Fiendish, any chance of reloading the pictures on the first page of the thread?

Re: Historic photos

Ed, I tried duplicating them throughout the thread. The problem was that the city changed their server or something, and the pics didn't show. I'll get on it today.

Re: Historic photos

Was sent this today. Apologies if it's already in here -- but i don't remember it, and i'm sure i'd have remembered this.

Re: Historic photos

Thanks for that picture Shawn. What a shame that the old Registry building was torn down. We don't have many buildings like that in Toronto.

Re: Historic photos

It is too bad that building there wasn't saved. It almost looks like it could have "fit" there, however.....

I am sure it would have ruined the sightlines of the new city hall and ultimately the registry building would have ended up looking like quite an eyesore.

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

very interesting pics!

do you have any pre-80s picture of melville/nycc?

It is a great shot. But the bigger shame may be the whole Eaton's loft complex (barely visible in the background of that great City Hall shot).
The whole thing got urban-renewed out of existence, replaced by the Eaton Centre and, at Bay+Dundas, 30 years worth of nothing (...and now Ryerson business building). All that nice loft architecture and those little streets, dead at the city centre.

Does anyone have more pics of that area pre-Eaton Centre: James St., Albert St, the old Salvation Army building, etc?

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

There are some in the archives, specifically the old City Hall loop. I'll try to find them.

Re: Bloor Danforth subway 1966

I saw some great pre-Eaton Centre shots at the archives a few years back including shots of them tearing down the west side of Yonge. I'm planning a trip to the archives in the next few week to check them out. Also planning to check Babel's stash.
