Eglinton East LRT | Metrolinx

I was thinking about this... If there is already 1.2 billion on the table can Tory not muster up a couple more 100 million $ here and there and perhaps get to 2 billion and build half the extension. Sort of what they did on the west side extension? They didn't take it all the way to Pearson but as far as they could get with the current financial limits.

If Tory can build the line to Eglinton and Bellamy where the Eglinton Go is or even till Guildwood Go would be a major victory imo. What is preventing him from doing a half extension? Maybe once Ford/Trudeau see Tory is actually serious about this they will top up a billion each and complete the whole extension.

Thoughts?

Since duel ends cars are being used on this line, there is nothing stopping built the extension in phase as the money roll in. All you do is built a 100 or so feet past a station so the next phase doesn't interfere with the next phase.

Many lines have been built in phases as it the line up and running sooner than later as well showing what is coming next to build ridership.

Saw a few in Paris France,

Phoenix can be use as an example as it has been built in many phases like 1.5 to 2 miles at a time. Another 1.5 mile extension is underway today.

Even the Blue line in Monopolies was built in phases with another one to come. The Greenline is being built in 2 phases with work underway today on phase 2.

If using single ends, it become more costly to built a loop only to tear it up a few years later. That was the plan for QQE and most likely not now.

The initial Yonge Subway was done that way. The University Subway itself was an extension of the Yonge Subway.

The "Downtown Relief Line" was to be done in two parts. Part one was from Osgoode Station to Pape/Danforth, and part two was to be north of Danforth. To show off his ego, Doug Ford created the Ontario Line plans that basically is both parts.

The OL has never really had an phase schedule under the DRL.

Ford did the right thing by taking the line north to Eglinton like it should had in the first place as going to Danforth was a joke. The OL next phase is to Sheppard or Steeles then to Steeles. The final Phase would be to Hwy 7 or Major Mack.

Doing this will take pressure off the Yonge in the short term, but with all the development taking place on both lines, we will be back to square one. The OL will never handle the ridership come 2050

A report to next week's Executive Ctte looks at this project along with the Waterfront East LRT.

There are multiple key bits...but first, a couple more links:

Side note to the MODS, in respect of the thread title, Metrolinx is not the proponent, its the City of Toronto.

The major news: Line 5 will end at Kennedy and the EELRT will be its own distinct line. While this is overall good operationally, I'm sure many here would have preferred the long term goal of have the grade-separated portion of Line 5 (Renforth to Science Centre) exist separately from the at-grade eastern portion.

But this also means that we now have good reason to grade separate the eastern section of the line, and doing so would allow us to have a fully grade separated line.

Just re-posting this from the crosstown thread:

Yea I kind of figured there would be a conflict the SSE tunnel. We don't know what the exact alignment to Kennedy will be but it would be nice if some kind of non-revenue connection was made to Line 5 likely along the overpass linking to Line 5 around at Ionview, but I can see the opposition to that. Having the EELRT permanently segregated from Line 5 would be dumb if we this line is built to the same standard as Line 5 (if its not than were going to have 3 separate incompatible LRT systems in the city). The line may as well be called the Scarborough-Malvern LRT if this is the route we are going. I would also guess this will be Line 7 meaning the Bathurst bus will be renumbered. Anyone want to lay bets on the line colour?

How about we do the reasonable thing, and just label this and build it as a streetcar line, rather than pretend that its part of the subway network, something we should've done in the first place with Finch West. Then we can grade separate the last 20% of Line 5, so its actually justified in its name.

Sure why not! While were at it we should extend the 503 Kingston Road up to Eglinton Avenue East to meet this line. Than we can have the old Scarboro Radial Railway back. Then we can have a one seat streetcar ride from West Hill to Downtown Toronto like in the 1900's.

I'd actually prefer that we make the St Clair, Spadina, and Harbourfront serious rapid transit (stop consolidation and real TSP), and indicate them as LRT lines on the map, along with Finch West and Eglinton. If you're boarding from a road lane, its a streetcar. Its extremely unlikely the City is going to rip up 6km of the freshly built line to elevate/tunnel it.

We absolutely should not be putting at grade streetcars in the same category of fully grade separated metros. Even with TSP, lane separate streetcar lines only show moderate speed improvements over their mixed traffic counterparts.

There is also a conflict when using crosstown trains, they'll have to design platforms and bridges to support 3 car trains and their weight. Now they want to use smaller LRVs that would it on existing bridges instead of building new ones over Highland Creek and the 401. They also want to cut cost by eliminating the Lawrence/Kingston Rd/Morningside tunnel and putting it at grade. Talk about being CHEAP!
