Danforth Line 2 Scarborough Subway Extension

Typical of the Toronto Star to play up the emotional side of this and ignore the substantive issues here. Including the reality that this notice fulfils a legal requirement and opens the door to those affected having their say.

It does highlight some hypocrisy though. Scarborough subway champions rally and make a lot of noise, and then when the painful part of expropriation and increased density pressure comes along, they scatter like cockroaches.

I empathise with any homeowner who faces expropriation for this kind of thing.

What's disappointing is the Star's depicting this as the city spreading fear and alarm in advance of the final decision. In fact, this is the process playing out as it should. The residents' lawyers would be all over the City if notice wasn't given early and in time for meaningful consultation.

Why is there talk of expropriation when the alignment hasn't even been finalized yet?
Because it's being considered. Surely best to let those that would be impacted now, while the process is still underway.

If not, you get the "why didn't you tell me earlier" complaint.

Damned if you do ... damned if you don't.

The article is 6 years old. Interesting to see that the issue is still ongoing: ...
How is it ongoing? The criticism there is that the resident had no information ahead of time that there might be expropriation.

Now they have learned from that lesson, and are warning ahead of time - but still there's complaints.

If anything, this proves that there's no point telling the resident ahead of time, because they are simply going to complain - so the longer you put it off, the less chance that you'll unnecessarily distress them.

TTC looking at single bore tunnel for Scarbouough Subway

So apparently a large part of this Scarborough town hall crowd now believes this subway doesn't have enough ridership to be justified. A huge change from the angry "Scarborough deserves subways" town halls of 2014.
