Canadian Soccer Association to bid for 2026 World Cup

What I disputed was that the USSF would ever support a Great Lakes bid for a WC.....but, yes, they have jointly held Gold Cups with Mexico......but I doubt they would ever partner on a WC bid.

There is still a fair bit of anti American sentiment around the world. I suspect that a joint Canada-USA world cup bid, or a joint USA-Mexico bid, would be more popular for FIFA delegates than a USA only bid.
They like giving the WC to smaller countries, but there is a big risk that they cannot deliver. This way, the USA would ensure that they deliver, or else USA can gobble up the entire tournament on a moments notice if the smaller country falters.

“The executive… confirmed that, as a matter of principle, only one association will be entitled to host a FIFA World Cup,” said FIFA in a statement.

Montopoli: Canada has no plans to share World Cup 2026 bid with another nation

http://the11.ca/2014/07/16/montopol...share-world-cup-2026-bid-with-another-nation/

“It’s a single bid. It’s Canada, at this moment. It’s Canada, the Canadian Soccer Association that will be bidding, and we will continue along that line. There really have been no discussions on joint bids, either Mexico or the United States. It’s not a position we’re taking. It is a straight bid from the Canadian Soccer Association.â€

Montagliani’s vision: A Canadian Division 1A that “coexists” with MLS, NASL

http://the11.ca/2014/06/18/montaglianis-vision-a-canadian-division-1a-that-coexists-with-mls-nasl/

In a nutshell, Canada will fulfill another of FIFA conditions by having a 1st Division League which will make our National team better in the long run. We have thousands of Soccer players but they barely have somewhere to play due to MLS designated rules that doesn't recognize Canadians players as domestic players. Most likely, most of the Canadian players would come from Canadian universities and lower divisions like the NASL 2nd division and the future 3rd division that will copy the CHL model with 3 junior leagues (West, Ontario and Quebec).

Official statement from Canada Soccer

As highlighted in our Strategic Plan 2014-2018 Leading a Soccer Nation released in January 2014, the Canadian Soccer Association (Canada Soccer) is committed to encouraging the growth of the game in our country and governing it professionally, in collaboration with our various partners.

As such, Canada Soccer has ongoing conversations with all professional leagues in Canada and North America, building valuable strategic business relationships and sharing our organisation’s vision for the growth of soccer. Although still in the exploratory stage, our dealings with these organisations within the sport and soccer communities have been positive. Further information will be shared as tangible developments are made.

Canada Soccer’s focus remains fixed on the key priorities outlined in the Strategic Plan 2014-2018 and will continue to build towards becoming a leading soccer nation.

Division 1A Canada (Just my opinion for Location)

Victoria (BC Lion owner looking at Victoria)
Calgary
Edmonton FC (If they leave NASL)
Saskatoon
Regina
Winnipeg
London
Hamilton (Tiger Cats Owner interested) http://www.thespec.com/sports-story...o-sit-down-and-talk-soccer-with-local-groups/
Kitchener-Waterloo
Ottawa (Own by CFL Red and Blacks and could leave NASL)
Quebec City (Montreal Alouettes interested to start a team in Quebec City)
Halifax

1st Division : MLS
Toronto
Vancouver
Montreal

2nd Division : NASL

Edmonton FC (Hopefully they would join Canadian league)
Ottawa Fury (Hopefully they would join Canadian league)

3rd Division

League 1 Ontario
Première Ligue de soccer du Québec
Pacific Coast Soccer League

Advantage to CFL owners
-Doubles the number of sport events in their stadiums
-extra revenue from TV deals, friendly matches and playoff matches
-Extra merchandise to be sold
Good return on investment

Advantage to TSN
-More content for their sport channel espacially after losing so many NHL games

Solid Snake, what about Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, and Oshawa?

Those areas are risky due to Toronto FC. Since a 1st Division team would require substantial investments, you'd need solid nerve to compete with another 1st divion team like Toronto FC.
Also I think they already have 3rd Division teams.

League 1 Ontario 3rd Division

Richmond Hill, Ontario
The Soccer Centre (1,000)

Thank you for clarifying.

Senators owner Eugene Melnyk did apply for a MLS team when he was trying to build a soccer stadium in the parking lot of his arena. MLS rejected the bid.....the city went ahead with Lansdowne park....soccer in Ottawa is now controlled by the same ownership group as the CFL team and their team, the Fury play in the NASL.

MLS did choose Vancouver over Ottawa for an expansion club, but not sure if the door was totally closed. Melnyk wanted a soccer specific stadium in Kanata. But the big blow was that the city then wanted to do "mulit-purpose" for CFL and think MLS would go into that as well. Melnyk had no interest in that and backed out.

MLS chose two cities for expansion in 2009...Vancouver and Portland....and no, as is typical, the door was/is not closed on Ottawa. The point is, and the one I was responding to, that any fantasy of a Canadian World Cup with one of the venue cities being in Ottawa will do nothing to enhance the city's chances of MLS. The stadium that would be used is currently there....it is being used by a soccer team not playing in MLS and the group that owns it has nothing to do with Melnyk and has shown no interest in MLS.

What has really closed the door on Ottawa is the subsequent expansion of MLS......at the time they were looking for team 17 and 18. They have since added Montreal and committed to teams in Orlando, Atlanta and NYC bringing the league to 22 teams.....an exclusive ownership right (although not a team) has been granted to a group in Miami for 23 and there are other US cities actively working to gain entry to the league (Sacramento, San Antonio, Minneapolis to name 3). MLS no longer has to seek cities....they are courted and the window for Ottawa, or any other Canadian city, has effectively closed.

Ultimately a purely Canadian soccer league would be best for the game here, with the current MLS and NASL teams as its starting point and expanding from there. Development of the game in Canada will always be hobbled as long as we rely on MLS, which was created to build American soccer and will never have more than a token Canadian presence. At the same time, the Canadian MLS teams are among the best supported in the league. Assuming Canadians can get over their knee jerk reaction against anything home grown, a Canadian league would have no problem competing. MLS isn't exactly a top tier league by international standards, so matching its level of play shouldn't be too much of a problem. There's always CONCACAF for competition with clubs in other countries.

Frankly, Canada's success is going to be based off of the MLS. Canada will have to rely on the youth development and scouting of its 3 MLS teams.

What I think will happen is that the MLS and the USL will continue to forge closer relations and eventually become one league system, just without promotion/relegation. This is already happening with MLS teams now having their reserve sides compete in the USL Pro. Eventually teams from major cities (such as Ottawa, San Antonio, Minneapolis) will create a team in the USL, and the top NASL teams will change leagues to the USL.

Well-supported teams in the future USL, with proper stadiums and wealthy owners, would eventually seek to apply for an MLS expansion spot.

That is from 2003. The decision has since been reversed. Portugal and Spain were allowed to submit a joint bid for 2018.

Nothing in the link I posted prevents joint bids from being made....it only says they will not be successful....like the two joint bids for 2018.....no idea what FIFA would have done if one of those joint bids (Belguim/Netherlands was the other) would have won as the only other solo bid outside of Russia was England and it was the first bid eliminated.

Anyway, whether joint bids can or can't be successful is only part of the issue.....the main one would be that joint bids tend to come from smaller countries and are typically 50/50 bids from equal sized (+/-) nations (footballing infrastructure wise) where the hosting would be shared equally.....that is not the case in any fantasized USA/Canada bid.....the USA does not need Canada for a bid and it is not clear to me why they would ever bother with us when, at least to some, the joint nature of the bid is bringing on a negative that they don't need.
